Job Description

The Aerospace, Transportation & Advanced Systems (ATAS) Laboratory of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking a Robotics Engineer who has interest in intellectually challenging and rewarding work. GTRI employs about 2000 employees working in 8 labs across 14 locations with a main campus in Atlanta, Ga.

The Robotics Engineer role entails seeking innovative solutions to the automation of perception and manipulation tasks within unstructured environments.  Activities will span: researching fundamental principles, developing algorithms, creating prototype embodiments, and fielding real world systems.  The work environment is best characterized as an applied research setting.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Robotics and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Robotics  and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Robotics.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Engineering/Robotics with 0-5 years of experience
  • Experience with robot manipulators, with requisite understanding of relevant dynamic/kinematic theory
  • Experience with state of the art methods for localization, mapping, and path planning (both theoretical and applied to robot motion)
  • Experience with implementing sensing and perception systems for real world applications
  • Strong ability to program using one or more high-level languages (C/C++, Python)
  • Experience with ROS
  • Works well independently or in group settings
  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of design using CAD software is a plus
  • Strong background in mathematics is a plus
  • Especially strong communication skills (verbal and written) are a plus

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
