Job Description

GTRI’s Cooperative Education (“co-op”) program offers you extensive opportunities to participate in diverse scientific and technological endeavors, use state-of-the-art equipment and rapidly improve your technical and leadership skills. The program allows you to alternate three semesters of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school.

The GTRI Robotics and Autonomous Systems Division seeks co-op in robotics, computer science, electrical/mechanical engineering, or related fields specializing in robotic planning, control, and software development for agile robotics. You will be joining a growing robotics division, and responsibilities may include research into new and innovative algorithms, rapid prototyping, systems integration, and software engineering.

We are looking for strong candidates who are self-motivated, have C/C++ programming skills, follow software engineering best practices, and a have strong mathematical foundation and problem solving skills.

The position will involve generation of research reports, publications, and briefs to customers, requiring excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ideal candidate will have experience with state-of-the-art algorithms on autonomous air, ground or indoor mobile robot systems. Research and class experience in at least one of these areas is desirable:

  • Multi-robot collaboration
  • Path planning and navigation
  • Behavior based robotics
  • Optimal control and estimation
  • Machine learning for robotic control
  • Experience with fast prototyping in MATLAB and/or python is a plus.

Applicants should be US citizens capable and willing to obtain a security clearance.

This opportunity is within the Aerospace, Transportation and Advanced Systems Lab (ATAS). ATAS conducts research for government and industry customers in industrial robotics, medical robotics, unmanned systems, aerodynamics, radar and weapons systems, food processing technology, and modeling of social systems.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Must be eligible to be approved by your college/university to participate in a co-op program and register for co-op credit with your university during work terms
  • Must be able to complete at least three full-time co-op terms (alternating three terms of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school) prior to graduation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in 1 or more programming languages
  • Task / team leadership experience
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Ability to obtain Secret Clearance upon hire
