Project/Unit Description

The Undersea Systems Program Office has projects that focus on advanced signal processing, adaptive sensor technologies, machine learning, and modeling and simulation for applications that include acoustics, undersea and cross-domain sensing, autonomy. The program office supports many components of the Navy and the Department of Defense, including the Office of Naval Research, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, and multiple Navy acquisition program offices. Key products include physics-based modeling and simulation tools, system analyses, sensor signal processing algorithms, and real-time prototypes.

Job Purpose

RF/Radar Systems Engineers work with a team to perform advanced system and algorithm development using established systems engineering approaches. Based on detailed trade studies and requirements analyses, radar systems engineers develop solutions to satisfy system requirements and perform functions related to all aspects of radar system design.  These functions include the development of the complete architectural design of radar systems, investigation and development of new algorithms to advance key sensor capabilities by leveraging signal processing techniques and novel waveform development, development of detailed simulations of algorithms and systems for design verification or to facilitate operational software development, the design of sensor modes that maximize sensor performance, the collection and analysis of data from laboratory or flight tests, and formal verification that the final design solution meet all system requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop requirements and direct others to perform design and theory research and lab testing tasks as task lead
  • Mentor others in developing methods and expertise in broad areas of design, theory, and testing as task lead
  • Document work of design, theory, and test in written and presentation form as team lead. Coordinate documentation inputs from team
  • Primary lead on the development of whitepapers and proposals in research areas of expertise
  • Primary lead on sponsors and potential sponsors engagement
  • Primary author of entire technical reports/presentations of projects, journal articles, and conference presentations

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate as a subject matter expert (SME) on projects and sponsor-hosted events addressing undersea challenges
  • Collaborate with fellow engineers within your assigned team and across GTRI to research, investigate, and experiment with advanced concepts and technologies
  • Document and communicate advanced concepts in a manner that can be understood by internal and external stakeholders
  • Participate in and lead, as appropriate, laboratory and field experiments / demonstrations

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Undersea domain experience to support the analysis, design, development, testing, integration, and deployment of new concepts and capabilities.
  • Knowledge in analyzing and developing concepts and capabilities related to policy, doctrine, tactics, and other disciplines related to the employment of undersea forces
  • Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams exhibiting technical and naval operational responsibilities
  • Experienced communicator with an ability to provide effective briefings to outside organizations
  • Experience in sonar/radar, physics, signal processing, applied mathematics, or oceanography

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • Awareness of Navy organizations, acquisition processes, and Research & Development efforts
  • Expert level knowledge of acoustic propagation and signal processing, mine countermeasures (MCM), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), or related disciplines
  • Experience in algorithm development, autonomous systems, and signal processing
  • Experience programming in MATLAB, Python, or similar language
  • Experience applying modern software development principles (such as DevSecOps) to DoD-relevant problems, preferably in cloud computing environments

  • 9 years of related experience with a Bachelors degree in Electrical engineering, computer and/or information science, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, oceanography, or other related fields.
  • 7 years of related experience with a Masters degree in Electrical engineering, computer and/or information science, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, oceanography, or other related fields.
  • 4 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Electrical engineering, computer and/or information science, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, oceanography, or other related fields.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
