Job Description

A full-time position is available for an RF Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Designer within the Antenna Systems Division (ASD) of the Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL) at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). ASD has approximately 30 full-time researchers operating on about $12M of sponsored research per year. The main focus of ASD is in four research areas; phased array antenna systems, high power microwave directed energy systems, electromagnetic modeling, and antenna test and calibration.

The phased array antenna system research area includes activities in:

  • Design and development of highly integrated active phased array antenna systems,
  • Research and development in next-generation integrated circuits for active antennas,
  • Independent technical assessment of phased array systems, including foreign threat systems,
  • Development of next-generation digital beamforming hardware and techniques

The high-power microwave (HPM) research area includes activities in:

  • Independent technical assessment of HPM systems
  • Electromagnetic Theory and Phenomenology
  • Advancing the state of the art in HPM technology

The electromagnetic modeling research area includes activities in:

  • Antenna performance as installed in platforms (using FEKO)
  • Radar Cross Section (RCS) modeling and predictions (using XPATCH)
  • Development of large-scale phased array antenna models using MATLAB
  • EMI / EMC analysis

The antenna test and calibration research area include activities in:

  • Near-Field and Far-Field antenna range testing techniques from VHF to W-Band
  • Antenna range calibration techniques
  • Calibration techniques for highly integrated active phased array antennas
  • EMI / EMC testing techniques

Job Duties

  • Start-to-finish involvement in projects requiring PCB design, layout, fabrication, and assembly
  • Component selection, schematic capture, PCB layout, and delivery to board houses
  • Interfacing with system engineers, mechanical engineers, digital, and electromagnetic engineers to maintain requirements
  • Interfacing with PCB fabrication and assembly houses to ensure the program schedule
  • Detailed knowledge of PCB layout best practices for EMI/EMC and manufacturing

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Physics

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in printed circuit board design/layout
  • Demonstrated performance in the development of RF printed circuit boards
  • Knowledge of PCB layout software
  • Have experience on multiple RF hardware design projects from design to test and delivery
  • Have intermediate-to-advanced knowledge of Altium or similar PCB design software
  • Have designed many-layer RF printed circuit boards including power, digital, and RF lines
  • Have designed front-end RF radiator boards
  • Have experience testing RF printed circuit boards
  • Have a forward-looking attitude that pushes the envelope into cutting edge hardware research
  • Have a working knowledge of phased array antennas
  • Excellent communication skills
