Job Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) in Atlanta, GA is searching for junior or senior researchers experienced in radio frequency (RF) and microwave integrated circuit (IC) design, simulation, fabrication, packaging, and testing to join the Antenna Systems Division (ASD) of the Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL). ASD is developing advanced phased array systems for Aerospace & Defense applications as well as 5G, SATCOM, and other RF sensing or electronic warfare applications across microwave and millimeter wave spectrum regions. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Practical RF/microwave design experience (millimeter-wave experience is plus).
  • Familiar with BiCMOS technology (e.g., Silicon Germanium (SiGe), standard CMOS, CMOS on SOI, and other related semiconductor technologies.
  • A strong understanding and interest of RF/microwave theory.
  • Familiarity with Cadence Virtuoso and Assura design tools, Keysight Advanced Design System (ADS), and Computational EM Modeling (HFSS, Sonnet, Momentum).
  • Experience with laboratory test bench equipment (network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, signal generator, power meter, etc.)
  • IC packaging experience (wire bond, ribbon bond, flip chip, etc.), simulation, and heterogeneous integration. (desired)
  • Digital design for RF IC components via serial peripheral interface, SERDES, or other related technology (desired - not required)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with peers, managers, and project stakeholders effectively using both verbal and written communications.

Job Duties

  • Lead the design of on-chip circuits blocks such as power amplifiers (PA's), low-noise amplifiers (LNA's), RF switches, RF filters, combiners, attenuators, phase shifters/time delay units, oscillators/LO chains, and mixers.
  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team composed of antenna, RF, digital, mechanical, and test engineers to develop IC technology for advanced phased array applications
  • Derive design specifications from phased array system requirements, assess performance trades, and evaluate performance metrics to meet system requirements
  • Evaluate the designed on-chip circuits in the lab either by hand-or automated measurements using signal analyzers, VNAs, signal generators, digital oscilloscopes, power meters, etc.
  • Provide engineering support to the phased array design team utilizing developed IC technology
  • Perform frequency conversion planning and signal chain design for low spurious, low phase noise, gain, IP3, noise figure (among other key metrics)
  • For senior engineers, lead IC development team, and mentor junior research engineers

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field of study.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field of study and four (4) years of relevant full time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience in the design of RF integrated circuits, fabrication, and/or testing
  • Demonstrated technical achievements in the research areas related to the position and mission of ASD
  • Excellent communications skills
  • For senior researchers, experience leading teams, and mentoring junior research engineers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Cadence design tool suite and other related tools for computational EM simulation, packaging, and digital design

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
