Job Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) System Engineering Division (SEN) is currently seeking an RF Engineer for a full time research faculty position in the Open Systems Development Branch (OSDB). OSDB enables the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) across the DoD through modeling Open Architecture (OA) reference systems, developing open systems, and standards development. The candidate will work with Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology to develop Ultra-Wide Bandwidth SDR systems utilizing open standards such as VITA 49.2 and define guidance for acquisition, development, and standardization.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and technical standards for utilization in SDR systems
  • Research and recommend strategic, innovative and cost-effective solutions to replace legacy RF systems
  • Conduct test engineering and evaluation of RF systems
  • Model software and hardware systems using the latest Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools
  • Develop SDR algorithms and architecture for various military and industrial applications
  • Analyze RF signal data
  • Execute countermeasures and vulnerability analysis of RF systems
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and four (4) years of relevant full time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with SDR hardware and software applications
  • Experience with design and/or testing of RF devices and RF communications systems
  • Experience using and developing transmit/receive algorithms for SDRs (such as X-MIDAS, GNU radio, Redhawk, Matlab, VITA 49/MORA)
  • Experience developing technical reports and presentations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with VITA 49.2 or Modular Open Radio Frequency Architecture (MORA)
  • Experience developing systems for military applications (avionics, GPS, EW, Communications, etc.) or industrial process controls
  • Experience integrating and troubleshooting complex systems
  • Experience with developing countermeasures against RF communications systems (jamming, spoofing, replay attacks, etc.)
  • Familiarity working with test and measurement equipment such as spectrum analyzers and logic analyzers
  • Familiarity with a variety of modulation and coding schemes
  • Familiarity with communication protocols used in military RF communication systems
  • Familiarity with security features associated with RF communication systems
  • Experience working with the U.S. government, including the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community
  • GPU or FPGA Development experience (e.g. CUDA, OpenCL, VHDL)
  • Active SECRET clearance

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
