Job Description

GTRI/CIPHER seeks a highly motivated individual with 1-10 years of work experience to support reverse engineering and analysis of RF communications systems, waveforms, and protocols. The candidate will be required to use Software Defined Radios to acquire and analyze RF communications signals. Most analysis is performed at the physical, data link, and network layers. The candidate will also be tasked to develop new SDR algorithms to support new signal analysis requirements.

Technical disciplines/experience that may be required include strong communications theory background, RF signal collection experience in a laboratory environment, development of algorithms for Software Defined Radios (SDR), and signal analysis experience focusing on the physical, data link and network layers. Skills in reverse engineering, embedded system programming, or working with test and measurement equipment are a plus. The candidate will be expected to support sponsor briefings and prepare technical deliverables.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to earn a Master’s degree within five years of employment
  • Solid background in communication theory to include modulation/demodulation, error correction coding, synchronization methods, and/or network management strategies
  • Experience with the use and development of algorithms for software defined radios. Example platforms/packages include X-Midas, GNU radio, Ettus SDR, DRT, Redhawk, Matlab
  • Familiarity with various communications protocols, with emphasis on the physical, data link, and network layers
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Ability to follow Georgia Tech policies and procedures
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • SIGINT experience
  • Experience with design or analysis of frequency hop signals
  • Experience working with a variety of communication systems such as HF, VHF, microwave, SATCOM, etc. Experience with military systems is preferred.
  • Familiarity with RF transmitter/receiver design
  • Familiarity with embedded serial data protocols
  • Design and/or testing of embedded circuit boards – experience test and instrumentation including soldering, use of JTAG, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Embedded device programming – experience programming micro-controllers, DSPs, FPGAs
