The Center for Computation and Visualiation’s (CCV) mission is to provide the scientific and technical computing expertise required to advance computational research and support Brown’s academic mission. In practice, this frequently means partnering with researchers in projects in a variety of fields. We have a team of data scientists and research software engineers with a wide range of scientific backgrounds (e.g., Engineering, Physics, Computer Vision, Biology, Psychology, Statistics, Applied Math, Computer Science, etc.), so we can closely calibrate a person with a project. CCV is looking for a Research Software Engineer (RSE) eager to help us on our mission. The RSE is responsible for developing, and deploying high-quality software packages and software engineering solutions that support Brown researchers and their collaborators. The RSE is expected to be a motivated, agile learner who keeps up-to-date knowledge in emerging technologies across a wide range of fields such as scientific programming, web development and deployment, and data management, data science and visualization. The RSE is expected to be or quickly become comfortable with best practices in software engineering with a strong emphasis on reproducibility; this includes version control, testing, continuous integration, containerized applications and multiple programming languages for data science and visualization. If applying as a Senior Research Software Engineer, the successful candidate is expected to be comfortable leading projects, and being the technical point of contact with faculty. This position also has responsibilities for mentoring of interns, and leading outreach activities to promote CCV; this includes producing and presenting workshops, as well as technical presentations in support of CCV and CIS activities.



Minimum Qualifications -

The successful candidate, as a minimum, should have the following background:

  • For a grade 10E - 1 - 2 years experience within a related field
  • For a grade 11E - 3 - 5 years experience within a related field
  • Bachelor's degree and an advanced degree with strong computational emphasis (equivalent experience may be an acceptable substitute)
  • Proficiency with at least one programming language (such as Julia, Python, MATLAB,R, C, C++, Java, Javascript, Haskell)
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical ability
  • Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and concepts from a variety of research fields
  • Willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment


Desirable Qualifications -

Candidates with experience in some or all of the following are highly preferred:

  • Version control
  • Linux/UNIX systems and shell scripting
  • Javascript libraries/frameworks such as React, Ember or other
  • Data management, including designing and using databases
  • Docker or Singularity containers
  • Cloud computing software and services
  • Scientific visualization in one or more science domains
  • Mentoring or teaching
  • Machine learning
  • Deep Learning
  • Computer Vision
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Signal Processing
  • GPU Computing
