Job Summary:

Research Scientist Position at the Pacific Parkinson's Research Centre, University of British Columbia.  The Pacific Parkinson's Research Centre (PPRC) is a Centre dedicated to clinical treatment and research related to Parkinson's disease.

The Research Scientist will analyse clinical data collected at the PPRC, as well oversee a portfolio of research projects related to Parkinson’s Disease.


Work Performed:

-  Primarily oversee a project related to video monitoring of patient data. In addition to utilizing pose estimation techniques from video recordings, this will likely involve time series analysis techniques applied to motion of keypoints for detection of disease status, including data mining algorithms, and modern machine learning techniques, such as deep learning techniques

-  Provide leadership in disseminating and/or commercializing this new technology including stakeholders like national and provincial patient groups

-  Prepare data for presentation in documents/talks such as research papers and grant proposals;

-  Provide leadership and direct supervision to staff including training and evaluating;

-  Perform other related duties.

Organizational Status:

The Research Scientist reports directly to the Principal Investigator (PI). 

Supervision Received:

The individual in this position will report directly to the PI

The incumbent will require minimal supervision and will exercise independent judgment regarding scheduling and timely completion of tasks.

Supervision Given:

Supervises Research Assistants, Graduate and/or Undergraduate students.

Consequence of Error/Judgement:

Errors will increase the probability of human safety risks, cause an increase in costs of operations and management and seriously impact the effectiveness of project delivery.


-  Graduate degree and/or a PhD in a relevant field of study or equivalent experience is required.

-  Minimum of three years' experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. 

-  Must have experience working with big databases, data mining and machine learning techniques, and have completed requirements to all PHSA pre-requisitions for working with human-data.

-  Must be experienced and knowledgeable in the management of staff and resources and the technical needs and protocols within a complex database project.

-  Must have experience as a lab manager/ director and have been responsible for data analyses, writing of manuscripts, preparation of figures, and publication of data, as demonstrated in candidates' publications.

-  Must display advanced organizational and administrative skills.

-  Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.

-  Must be proficient with Microsoft Office and with relevant software development tools and programming languages (e.g. Matlab, Java, Python, SQL, R, etc.).

-  Prior experience in the above (and working with physicians) is an asset

-  Advanced oral and written communication skills.

-  Must have good interpersonal skills, be motivated, adaptable to a changing work environment and be energetic with a solid work ethic.
