Research Scientist will contribute to basic and applied research specializing in robotics and automation as per client’s research and implementations needs. Performs tasks on their own initiative and may serve as principal investigator (PI) or Co-Principal Investigator and/or work under the direction of a PI or Program Director with minimal supervision. 

  • Performs basic and applied research in area of considerable scope. Analyzes and prepares results as directed.
  • Design and develop robotic and mechatronic systems.
  • Direct efforts in the modeling and control of robotic systems.
  • Integrate sensors, actuators and real time control to mechatronic systems.
  • Conducts independent research within specialized field.
  • Supervises staff and/or mentors students.
  • Presents research findings at the national and international levels.
  • Publishes in refereed journals, or independently within the scope of his/her responsibilities in the programs of the principal investigator, in collaboration with the principal investigator.
  • Develops and formulates original design of new processes to study research problems.
  • Identifies topics and collaborates with research groups across disciplines.
  • Writes Technical Reports.
  • Provides assistance in area of expertise to specific contracts, proposals, and related documentation as directed.
  • Organizes and coordinates the experimental portions of funded research projects.
  • Coordinates project meetings, organization, and compilation of progress reports.
  • Serves as a liaison with various agencies regarding research activities on contracts and grants.
  • Writes or aides in the submission of extramural proposals as needed.
  • Assists staff and/or students working on projects and other duties as needed.
  • Monitors and stays abreast on federal, state, local government, and commercial technical programs.  Ensures compliance with all applicable and relevant regulatory guidelines.
  • Coordinates activities, communications, and/or budgets for program(s) and technical projects.
  • Serves as a University card user for departmental transactions as directed by the Project Manager. Adheres to University credit card policies and procedures.
  • Utilize Vision based techniques for autonomous control of robotic platforms & drones.
  • Must effectively assume leadership of small groups and work without additional supervision once objectives are defined and methods of approach are set.


Minimum Qualification:

  • Doctoral degree and three (3) years of relevant experience or equivalent in training and/or experience.

Departmental Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with robotics systems.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Doctoral Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science and three (3) years of relevant experience or equivalent in training and/or experience.
  • Experience in conducting research into the feasibility, design, operation, or performance of robotic systems, such as planetary rovers, multiple mobile robots, or reconfigurable robots.
  • Design robotic systems that includes: automatic vehicle control, advanced displays, advanced sensing, robotic platforms, computer vision, or telematics systems.
  • Design or program robotics systems for environmental clean-up applications to minimize human exposure to toxic or hazardous materials or to improve the quality or speed of clean-up operations.

Advertised Salary:

  • $70,000 - $80,000
