The primary function of this position is to manage, operate and conduct critical research at the Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing facility at ECE Illinois. This testing facility was created with internal funding and ARPA-E funds and it is critical for the success of numerous ongoing research projects funded by ARPA-E, DOE, and DOD. In addition, it is envisioned the facility will be utilized for instructional purposes as part of a course that the Power and Energy Systems area at ECE Illinois is planning to start offering in the next 2-3 years. This position will be critical in the successful implementation of such a course.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Conduct critical research tasks related to on-going research projects that utilize the facility. These include development, implementation, and testing of distributed algorithms for grid-connected and grid-islanded microgrids.
  • Maintain and operate the HIL testing facility. This includes maintain the equipment custom firmware and hardware and upgrading it as needed.
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of students utilizing the facility for research tasks.
  • Assist with the utilization of the facility for instructional tasks.
  • Assist with grant proposal development to attract additional research projects that feature the testing facility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to further the mission of the testing facility and Power area.


The Research Engineer position requires a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering with specialization in electric power systems, 5 years of experience with dynamical modeling of distributed energy resources (DERs), electric power distribution systems, and microgrids, 3 years of experience with HIL emulation equipment and distributed computing platforms based on Arduino and ZigBee technology, 2 years of experience with distributed algorithms for coordination and control of distributed of DERs and microgrids and knowledge of Typhoon HIL emulation hardware similar to the one at the ECE Illinois HIL testing facility. A publication and presentation record in modeling and HIL emulation of DERs and microgrids, a thorough knowledge of DER and microgrid state-space modeling techniques, thorough knowledge of singular-perturbation techniques for model-order reduction of dynamical systems, thorough knowledge of existing literature on distributed algorithms for control and coordination of DERs and excellent interpersonal and communication skills are also required. Experience supervising students is preferred.

The Research Engineer position is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
