Research Engineer/Scientist -- ELSYS

Job Description

The Research Engineer/Scientist position supports the Patuxent River Field Office located in Lexington Park, MD. The position will assist senior engineers and program managers in planning, testing, executing, and completing large-scale, technically complex projects for rapidly fielding Department of Defense (DoD) aircraft improvement programs.


  • Support sponsored research projects and manage project execution in support of engineering task leads, tracking budget, schedule, and progress against plan
  • Support test and evaluation through data collection and analysis
  • Provide configuration management and quality assurance process support
  • Support purchasing requirements as needed by sponsored projects
  • Conduct field/lab testing and analyze measured test data
  • Develop physics-based models and perform complex math/physics-based analysis for radar and sensor capabilities
  • Assist senior engineers in the technical planning and execution of aircraft improvement projects as determined by sponsor requirements

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in engineering processes and methodologies applicable to systems development
  • Experience in a collaborative team environment
  • Experience creating and delivering technical presentations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with either MATLAB, C++, C, or Python
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to a non-technical audience
  • An active Secret Clearance
  • Participation in professional development activities including membership and leadership in professional societies, professional registrations, or certifications
  • Understanding of government contracting and business processes
  • Experience in military or government environment

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
