The Electric Power System Research team is looking for R&D Electrical Engineering staff members with a passion for electric power system research.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop new optimization techniques for transmission planning with high penetrations of renewable generation and energy storage
  • Develop new optimization techniques for microgrid design
  • Develop new optimization techniques for improving grid resilience at the transmission and distribution level
  • Develop new optimization techniques for sizing, placement, and valuation of energy storage
  • Develop new models for accurately capturing interdependencies between the electric grid and other critical infrastructure
  • Create new protection schemes for grid tied and networked microgrids
  • Develop new control schemes to improve grid stability with high penetrations of renewables
  • Develop new control schemes for microgrids
  • Develop new analysis and control techniques for low inertia grids
  • Identify new PMU-enabled applications

Department Description:

The Electric Power Systems Research Department conducts R&D and advanced analytics to enable the modernization of the nation's electric power grid. This work includes the development of improved planning and operations methodologies from the bulk system down to end users. Our capabilities encompass the development and application of advanced algorithmic and computational methods, grid operations, economics, and policy. Examples of specific core areas include power system dynamics, operational reliability, advanced renewables integration, electricity market development, smart grid technologies and related information analysis, optimal resource expansion, and computationally based decision support. This department is highly inter-disciplinary, working collaboratively with universities, utilities, government agencies, and both national and international research organizations.

  • Master's in Electrical Engineering or related field;
  • Coursework or work experience with electric power systems;
  • Strong publication record;
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q security clearance.


  • Ph.D. in electrical engineering or related field;
  • Optimization coursework or experience;
  • Transmission planning coursework or experience;
  • Control theory coursework or experience;
  • Strong programming skills, e.g., MATLAB, R, Python, C++ or similar language;
  • Experience with resilience modeling;
  • Power system operations coursework or experience.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
