The Material Sciences Division (MSD) in the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate has an opening for a Staff Researcher to perform scientific research in a National Laboratory setting. You will engage with a multi-disciplinary team developing advanced numerical and physical approaches to studying reacting flows in conditions of extreme temperatures and pressures. You will apply techniques of machine learning, on-demand multiscale simulation, and numerical analysis to developing large scale scientific code applications that run efficiently on heterogeneous computer architectures. You will work closely with analysts to develop effective solutions to complex multi-physics problems of interest to national security. A variety of applicant backgrounds are encouraged to apply including those with significant experience in one or more of the following areas: Chemistry, computer science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics. This position is in the Macroscopic Modeling team within the Reaction Dynamics Group.

Essential Duties
- Conduct fundamental research while developing state advanced numerical approaches to efficiently simulate chemical processes and high explosive detonations on heterogeneous computer architectures.
- Work closely with a team of analysts to develop methods to simulation high explosive detonations and other events of interest to national security.
- Design and Develop complex reaction mechanisms for high explosive shock initiation based on sub-scale simulations and experiments.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent, complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Document research; write and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community, at working group meetings, and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in physics, chemistry, computer science, materials science, engineering or related fields or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Significant experience in developing advanced numerical simulation techniques for heterogeneous architectures.
- Significant experience in conceiving and implementing numerical methods in a high-level language (e.g., Fortran, C++, other).
- Significant experience either using computational modeling tools or programming languages to interpret complex experimental datasets.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills as reflected in well-written published papers and effectivepresentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience in using scripting languages (e.g., Perl, Python, other) for automation and analysis and in algorithmic development within a large software suite.
Experience in large scale multi-physics simulations involving multiple materials and configurations.
- Knowledge of shock wave physics and experience in implementing chemical reaction mechanisms into hydrodynamic simulations.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
