As a Computer Scientist you will apply integrated technical judgment which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories missions. Roots the work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles. You'll create and apply scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems. You will use physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development. Plans, conducts, and executes Sandia's science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration. Some travel required.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Analysis of mission critical HPC/HPDA applications with architectural simulators and advanced architecture testbeds to drive the design of future architectures toward increased performance and energy efficiency
  • Codesign of new HPC/HPDA applications, system software and emerging hardware capabilities
  • Analysis and projections of performance of Sandia HPC/HPDA applications on current computing architectures and models of future architectures
  • Development and deployment of advanced algorithms and tools for performance portability on next generation HPC architectures

Department Description:

Sandia’s Center for Computing Research (CCR) supports the development of future supercomputer systems through research and development efforts on critical technologies for leading-edge scientific and engineering analysis high performance computing (HPC) and high-performance data analytics (HPDA). Areas of active research include: hardware and system architectures, System on Chip processor designs, advanced memory subsystems, interconnection network technology, and architectural simulation capabilities for both HPC and HPDA.

The Scalable Computer Architectures Department is focused on the development of future computer architectures which significantly improve the performance of our mission computing workload. We work closely with the national laboratory community, academia, computing industry and many other federal and international agencies to further this capability. Through testbeds and larger scale prototypes of systems, simulation, emulation and performance estimation, we are leaders in defining the future of supercomputing.

  • MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or relevant field, along with BS is science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM), or equivalent combination of scientific and engineering education and experience
  • Programming experience (C, C++, others)
  • Experience with software development tools (versioning systems, debuggers, etc)
  • Experience, by way of education and/or work, of high performance computing systems; parallel or concurrent programming techniques; high-performance network programming interfaces; scalable computing algorithms; and performance analysis tools
  • Able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance


  • Excellent programming skills (C, C++, others);
  • Experience in programming parallel computing systems;
  • Experience with system software for highly-threaded systems;
  • Experience with HPC compiler toolchains;
  • Experience with toolchains for accelerator-based (GPU, FPGA, etc.) systems;
  • Experience with shared memory programming models and runtime systems;
  • Experience with performance portability methods for high-performance computing.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
