The Electric Drives Research (EDR) Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for an electric motor designer position to conduct projects, expand research, and manage research and development to support the electric motor research program in the areas of battery electric vehicle propulsion technologies.  The EDR group supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Program as well as other customers in the development of advanced electric traction drives for automotive applications. The successful candidate will be capable of developing innovative motor concepts as well as performing and providing technical guidance to support the Vehicle Technologies Program goals.

Major Duties / Responsibilities

  • Conduct R&D projects and help the expansion of R&D to take advantage of our multidisciplinary capabilities, multimodal strengths, and unique tools and capabilities.
  • Be versant in various modeling and simulation programs as well as electromagnetic FEA programs.
  • Lead and manage technical projects in the expansion of R&D in Electric Machinery Research while striving to work with and involve other areas of expertise within the laboratory.
  • Have excellent oral and written skills to present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at national and international technical society meetings such as IEEE, SAE and others.
  • Interact with industry and government sponsors in pursuit of new and additional research funding.
  • Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, the industry, and the utilities.
  • Prepare new proposals to the internal and external funding agencies.
  • Develop research proposals that solicit new and ongoing work in the electrical machinery and traction drive research program.
  • Publish original work in technical reports, peer reviewed journals, and professional society magazines.
  • Mentor junior staff and students in the area of electrical motors technology




  • A Ph.D. in electrical engineering with a focus on electrical machinery design and relevant 4 to 10 years experience with motor design and analysis tools.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Strong people skills to support team building and leadership.
  • Knowledge of CAD, FEA and system design modeling and simulation software tools is desired.
  • Demonstrated publication record of scientific results in either peer reviewed journals or presentations at national meetings, are expected.
  • A strong commitment to scientific integrity is an important requirement.
  • Prior work experience with the industry will be valued for this position.

 Some travel will be required for this position.
