Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to perform research in the area of high-performance computing (HPC) for quantum optimal control and characterization. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team that develops HPC solvers for the Schrodinger and Lindblad equations to be used within optimization algorithms. These solvers will be used to determine signals for controlling and characterizing the next generation of quantum computing hardware. This position is within the Computing Directorate, Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division.

Essential Duties
- Research new strategies and explore existing techniques for scalable quantum optimal control and characterization algorithms that are efficient on existing and next-generation DOE leadership supercomputers.
- Provide the supporting mathematical analysis of the underlying algorithms and deploy the solvers on modern HPC platforms, including GPUs.
- Provide parallel programming implementations in C++ and corresponding code optimization on select HPC machines.
- Participate in the establishment of future research directions and contribute to group grant proposals, including proposal presentations and preparation of proposals.
- Document complex research and development progress via technical reports, journal publications, and conference presentations and collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to accomplish research goals.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Ph.D .in Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics, or a related field.
- Knowledge of numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra, numerical solution of differential equations, and gradient-based numerical optimization.
- Experience in scientific computing.
- Experience programming in C/C++ in a Unix/Linux environment.
- Ability to conduct high quality independent research and to develop implementations to evaluate the results.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact in a clear and concise manner, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
- Ability to take the initiative and have interpersonal communication skills necessary to work effectively in a dynamic team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience developing parallel scientific simulation software in C++ with MPI.
- Experience with the PETSc and RAJA software libraries and GPU programming.
- Knowledge of quantum physics.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: None required.

However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check. (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)
