Project Engineer Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Possesses, understands and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of power system Commissioning and related SEL products.
  • Train and assist customers with the creation, design, configuration, validation, installation, commissioning and operation of automation and/or protection systems.
  • Complete and implement assigned work within agreed upon scope, schedule and budget to a high level of quality and safety.
  • Participate in the preparation of functional design specifications.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed design documents, reports, checklists, test reports, and deliverables.
  • Follow and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles.
  • Understand. Create. Simplify.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or relevant discipline
  • 5+ years relevant application experience with electric power systems, industry practices, and Commissioning practices and philosophies
  • Good knowledge of electric power system protection and control, integration and/or automation and communications applications
  • Working knowledge of electric power system design, studies, information and communication technology and protective relay applications
  • Willing to travel both domestically and internationally a minimum of 25% based on focus area
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL
  • Willing to travel both domestically and internationally up to 75% based on commissioning needs
  • Negative drug test result(s)


Preferred Qualifications
Engineer in Training certificate
Electrical utility, industrial plant, consulting engineering, or system integrator experience
Project engineering experience
Working knowledge of Vision or other project management tracking software

Technician Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Serve as a key point of contact for the planning, design, testing, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of electrical power systems, both at customer sites and SEL offices.

2. Teach customers and mentor other technicians in the application of SEL design practices for protection and automation systems as well as quality standards.

3. Own writing and conducting tests in support of department objectives, documenting and reporting malfunctions, and identifying/analyzing undesirable trends.

4. Provide regular communication and timely reports to engineering staff, leadership and customers regarding commissioning activities.

5. Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace, implementing safe and environmentally sound work practices, and conducting safety training.

6. Model, teach, and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles.

7. Understand, create, and simplify.

8. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Associates degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent certification, training and experience

8+ years working experience in electrical power system planning, design, testing, installation, commissioning, operation and/or maintenance

Demonstrated ability to write automated test plans for testing protective relays and other related devices

Demonstrated proficiency with Autocad, Microstation, and/or AcSELerator Quickset and modern test equipment such as OMICRON or Doble

Willing to travel up to 75% of the time

Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills

Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities

Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment

Background check results satisfactory to SEL

Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with industry protocols (IEC-61850, DNP, Modbus)

Physical Requirements

Ability to work in outside environments with varying climates

Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, squat, climb, and use arm and hand movements

Ability to carry tools and to handle materials and equipment of up to 50 pounds

Ability to work at heights on lifts, stepladders and/or extension ladders
