Job Title: Project Engineer I - Commissioning
Location: Idaho - Boise

SEL Engineering Services, Inc. (SEL ES) seeks a professional, innovative and detailed individual to join our team focused on Electric Power Systems Automation and Control Commissioning. If you are looking for an opportunity to work with customers and travel to field sites to provide high quality and helpful technical commissioning support, then this Commissioning Engineer position is for you!


  • Knows and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of power system focus area* and related SEL products.
  • Train and assist customers with the installation, commissioning and operation of automation and/or protection systems, both on-site and from SEL offices.
  • Performs work that is varied and may be somewhat difficult or complex.
  • Complete assigned work within agreed upon schedule and budget while focusing on quality and safety.
  • Support project and engineering teams in the development of project deliverables.
  • Provide regular communication to SEL and customer project management, engineering, and support groups regarding project specifications.
  • Document and report technical issues and malfunctions and identify/analyze any undesirable trends.
  • Provide support for other SEL marketing, sales, application engineering and development activities.
  • Continuously identify, measure, and improve processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or related degree
  • Engineer in Training certificate or equivalent
  • Two or more year's relevant experience with electrical power systems or industrial automation system practices
  • Knows and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of protection, integration and/or automation applications for electric power systems
  • Acceptable technical training, speaking and writing skills
  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL
  • Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with electric power transmission, distribution, and/or generation systems
  • Experience being a part of project teams
  • Working knowledge of and experience with various PLC and IEC-61131 programming languages
  • Working knowledge of and experience with communication protocols, such as DNP3.0 and IEC-61850 GOOSE
  • Working knowledge of and experience with communication network architectures, such as Ring, Mesh, Ladder
  • Electrical utility, industrial plant, consulting engineering, or system integrator experience

*Focus areas = Protection, Automation, Design & Commissioning
Protection = system protection, protective relays and their applications, settings, and testing
Automation = software, integration and automation, industrial controls, PLCs, industry protocols (IEC-61850, DNP, Modbus), Ethernet systems, protocol analyzers, and industry SCADA practices
Design = analyze technical specifications; create detailed physical and electrical designs, bills of materials, and job estimates
Commissioning = perform commissioning and site acceptance testing in the field, train and assist customers with installation, commissioning and operation of devices and systems (requires traveling more than 50% of the time)
Special Protection Systems (SPS) = integrate knowledge of power system automation (relay communication protocols and technologies) with protection to propose, design (RTDS), test (FAT), and implement complete grid solutions for customers while effectively communicating, training, and facilitating project progress

Boise, ID- This position is located in Boise, ID, capital of the gem state, and on the Boise River in the southwestern part of the state.
