Whole Life Engineering (WLE) is responsible for ensuring our products are Safe, Reliable, Maintainable and delivered on time. WLE consists of multiple disciplines that support engineering, our program offices and our customers. Our WLE disciplines participate in the total life cycle of our products from conception to deactivation. Our focus area is product support, including the following disciplines: Reliability System Safety and Supportability.

Job Summary:
System Safety Engineering is a department of Whole Life Engineering. Our team sets system requirements, analyzes the design, assesses test data, reviews operating and maintenance manuals, and assess risk by way of hazard analyses, and software and firmware safety programs. System safety provides assurance to our employees, the customer and end users that our products safely perform their required mission functions throughout their lifecycle while meeting overall cost and schedule requirements. We methodically analyze missile and defense programs at a component and system level to identify, eliminate or mitigate hazards, As a member of the team, youll collaborate across departments, including Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Supply Chain, Operations, Test & Integration and Production.

As a Principal System Safety Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
  • Perform MIL-STD-882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses, or customers approved equivalent
  • Conducting Safety Analyses and documenting results (Preliminary Hazards List/Analysis, System Hazard Analysis, Hazard Tracking Logs, Functional Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Safety Assessment Report)
  • Developing System and Subsystem Safety Requirements and providing requirements analysis and flow-down of Safety requirements and attributes in the Dynamic Object Oriented Requirements System (DOORS)
  • Manage one large system safety program or multiple mid-sized safety programs to include:
    • Monitoring program technical execution, interfacing with stakeholders (e.g. customers, program offices, subcontractors, vendors, etc.), performing Earned Value Management, and Systems Engineering tasks
    • Effectively managing the System Safety Program and tasking of personnel as assigned
    • Mentoring junior engineers in the field of System Safety
  • Gaining Customer Safety Approval for Test or Deployment
    • Preparing Safety Assessment Reports and Safety Program Briefs for Customer Approval
    • Developing Technical Data Packages and Presentations for Safety Board Reviews
    • Briefing safety of the program at technical reviews and as part of the safety approval process
  • Supporting change review boards
  • Participating in System Safety Working Groups and Technical Interchange Meetings
  • Representing System Safety Engineering and presenting results of safety analyses at formal program design reviews

An Advanced degree in a related field and minimum 5 years experience may be considered for this role.

Qualifications You Must Have:
Education: BS in a STEM discipline or BA in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or Chemistry

Employment Experience:
  • 8+ years experience with: System Safety Engineering; Energetics, Explosives, or Propellant Safety; or Battery Safety; or Software or Firmware Engineering; or equivalent Safety Engineering Experience (e.g. Aerospace Safety, Automotive Safety, or Medical Device safety engineering)
  • Experience with hazard analysis, e.g. software safety, firmware safety, Fault Tree analysis, failure diagnosis or corrective action recommendations
  • Team leadership experience
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. US citizenship is required as only US citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Qualifications We Value:
  • Experience working with U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or USAF combat/weapon systems and Ordnance
  • Experience developing and verifying system requirements
  • Use of tools, such as Dynamic Object-Oriented Requirements System (DOORS) database tool, Clearcase, Windchill Product Data Manager (PDM), Jenkins
  • Experience with a wide application of technical theories and concepts related to system safety engineering and combat/weapon systems design
  • Experience planning, analyzing and reporting results IAW MIL-STD-882
  • Knowledge of MIL-HDBK-454, MIL-STD-1901, MIL-STD-1316, MIL-STD-1472, MIL-STD-1474, Missile Defense Agency Assurance Provisions (MAP), MIL-STD-464, Joint Software System Safety Committee (JSSSC) Handbook, MIL-STD-1425, and AMCOM 385-17
  • Experience with Earned Value (EV) Management
  • Experience developing proposals and basis of estimates
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
