The Whole Life Engineering Directorate has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated System Safety Engineer to join us on the Missile System Safety and Reliability team in Huntsville, AL.

The Whole Life Engineering (WLE) team proactively seeks and applies innovative, customer - focused solutions for superior mission support and system analysis from concept to disposal for new and legacy, domestic and international programs. WLE is made up of several disciplines whose main objective is to influence hardware and systems early in their life cycle to assure effective operation, reliability, system safety, maintainability and economical ownership by the customer and end user.

The System Safety Engineering Department is responsible for ensuring Raytheon products are safe, reliable, maintainable and under configuration control.

As a Principal System Safety Engineer, you will be an integral participant in the design/development process and will exercise considerable latitude in technical decisions to meet customer requirements. In this role you will work with a multi-disciplinary team responsible for performing safety hazard analyses to identify risks and influence design to eliminate or minimize safety hazards. You will also be responsible for presenting safety results to internal and external stakeholders.

As a Principal System Safety Engineer youll work with direction from Program and System Safety Department and will exercise considerable latitude in technical decisions to meet customer requirements. In this role youll represent the System Safety Engineering Department as a key member of the program(s) which they support, and youll also be responsible for presenting safety results to internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
  • Perform System Safety engineering tasks and analyses, applying technical knowledge to meet Raytheon and customer requirements
  • Interpretation of system requirements, customer specifications and military standards to develop appropriate safety requirements for hazard mitigation or elimination
  • Design verification (fault tree analyses, hazard analyses, sneak circuit analyses, software system safety analyses)
  • Exercise considerable latitude in technical decisions to meet customer requirements relevant to the System Safety program
  • Prepare internal and customer reports describing various analyses relevant to the System Safety program
  • Represent the System Safety Engineering Department as a key member of the program, responsible for identifying key issues and addressing them to achieve optimal technical solutions
  • Manage one or more System Safety programs; responsibilities include monitoring program technical execution, interfacing with stakeholders (e.g. customers, program offices, subcontractors, vendors, etc.), performing Earned Value Management System tasks and effectively managing System Safety engineering personnel as needed to support program tasks.
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.

Required Skills:
  • 8+ years of related system safety engineering experience
    • 6+ years of experience in the aforementioned areas along with a relevant Master's Degree may be considered for this job.
  • Experience with safety hazard analysis, potentially including software safety, firmware safety, Fault Tree analysis, failure diagnosis and/or corrective action recommendations
  • Project management experience
  • US Citizenship is required
Desired Skills:
  • Experience in performing software safety analysis in compliance with MIL-STD-882E and/or AR 385-17
  • Existing DoD clearance preferred
  • Effective preparation and presentation to Department of Defense Safety Review Boards to include: Software System Safety Technical Review Panel; Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board; Fuze and Initiation System Technical Review Panel; Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board; Non-Nuclear Munitions Safety Board
  • Experience in Rocket Motor Ignition Systems and Fuzing Systems safety requirements and qualifications testing programs (MIL-STD-1901A, MIL-STD-1316 and JOTP-052)
  • Proficiency in performing Sneak Circuit Analysis
  • Strong written, oral and presentation skills to support interface with customers and Safety Review Boards
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to manage a safety program and provide direction to supporting safety personnel
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Access and Project

Required Education (including Major):
  • BS in a STEM discipline or BA in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or Chemistry
