The Materials Engineering department is seeking a Ceramist/High Temperature Materials to work in the Materials Process and Engineering department in either our Andover, MA or Tucson, AZ facility. Materials Engineering charter is to leverage material and process expertise throughout Raytheon Missile & Defense. We are committed to excellence supporting our customers and allies worldwide.

The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting all phases of product life cycle (including design, development and production) for a multitude of programs. The analyses will cover a wide range of topics in ceramics and high temperature materials from material synthesis, material characterization, process issues, and failure analysis. The candidate will work directly with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Operations Engineering, Systems Engineering, government customers and subcontracting suppliers from design concept through production. Candidate will ensure design is in compliance with Materials Engineering aspects of military and industry specifications and standards related to materials and processes. The candidate will develop technical solutions to complex problems that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.

The position requires the ability to work on several analyses in parallel. To work with members of the other sections in the department with areas of expertise in materials, chemistry, metallurgy, coatings, and optics. This involves teaming with them to support your analysis and to support theirs in turn. The position also requires working with Component Engineers, Program Chief Engineers, and Failure Investigation Teams / Failure Review Boards (FIT / FRB). This may also require periodic presentations to these entities or even Program / Raytheon Missile Systems management. This position may require periodic travel


U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require U.S. Security Clearance.

Required Experience, Skills and Education:
  • For a Principal Multi-Disciplined Engineer - Eight (8) years of experience in an engineering / manufacturing technology environment.
  • Experience with ceramic processing and fabrication
  • Masters degree in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or Related Science or Engineering field
  • U.S. Citizenship is required
Desired Experience, Skills and Education:
  • 12 plus years of direct experience in ceramic and high temperature materials processing and fabrication
  • Understanding of optical fabrication and precision machining
  • Experience in brazing and joining
  • Possess knowledge in Materials Engineering aspects of Military, government and industry specifications and standards related to Materials and processes.
  • Possess capabilities demonstrating a willingness to provide coaching and enhancement of team play. Will be required to mentor younger engineers
  • Excellent technical writing skills for reports and specifications using MS Word and Excel; good platforms skills using PowerPoint for presentations.
  • Raytheon Six Sigma certification desired but not required.
  • Data collection and presentation skills to write high level reports for out briefs and presentations to director and VP level management
  • Ability to effectively work parallel analyses
  • Familiarity with component data sheets and drawings
