Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry to work within the geological AMS (GeoCAMS) group in support of the development and application of meteoric 10Be and 7Be and other cosmogenic nuclides. Areas of interest include terrestrial surface processes, such as soil development and erosion, geomorphology, hydrogeology, and anthropogenic changes in land-use and climate. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division.ESSENTIAL DUTIES- Develop new applications of cosmogenic nuclides to studies of soil processes, geomorphology, hydrogeology, and anthropogenic change.- Collect and prepare cosmogenic nuclide AMS samples from a variety of environmental matrices, such as rock, soil, sediment, and water.- Assist in the operation of CAMS tandem FN accelerator for 7Be, 10Be, 26Al, 36Cl and other trace isotopic analyses.- Collaborate with a wide range of earth, physical, and chemical scientists, providing expertise to diverse collaborators on cosmogenic nuclide techniques for the geosciences.- Develop new projects with internal and external collaborators using cosmogenic nuclides for research in the geosciences.- Present results at program meetings and national and international conferences, in seminars, and in programmatic reports and peer-reviewed journals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS- Ph.D. in the geosciences, soil science, or a related field.- Quantitative understanding of cosmogenic nuclides for application to earth-surface processes such as lateral transport across terrestrial-aquatic interfaces.- Experience with chemical preparation of environmental samples for isotopic analysis.- Field experience in sample acquisition from sediment cores, outcrops, soil pits, water wells and/or similar environmental settings- Ability to publish research results in peer-reviewed literature.- Proficient written and communication skills to work in a dynamic team setting and discuss technical information with non-experts.- Ability to work with individuals with differing technical backgrounds, especially those specializing in geology, biogeochemistry, physics, and chemistry.- Ability to work independently and think creatively.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS- Experience with application of cosmogenic isotopes (7Be, 10Be, and 14C) to soil, watershed, and Earth surface processes.- Understanding of the geochemistry of soils, rocks, and sediments in terrestrial settings under various climatic and environmental conditions.- Interest in developing novel techniques and applications for cosmogenic isotopes applied to research in surface transport of sediment and associated elements in the context of anthropogenic change.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: None required.

However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process.
