Seeking a post-doctoral research associate with demonstrated technical skills and capabilities in ultrasonics measurements and modeling as part of the Advanced Reactor Engineering (ARE) Group in Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division (RNSD).


Major Duties / Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and apply new ultrasonic measurement techniques to nuclear plant component inspection and health monitoring
  • Develop and test new ultrasonic sensors and instrumentation for extreme environments
  • Develop ultrasonic modeling capabilities and apply them to solving forward and inverse problems
  • Contribute to journal articles, conference articles, and technical reports


Qualifications Required

  • PhD in mechanical, electrical, or nuclear engineering, engineering physics, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience with ultrasound measurements
  • Strong understanding of the underlying physics of ultrasound
  • Experience with ANSYS, ABAQUS, or other similar modeling software
  • Demonstrated results-oriented problem-solving skills and a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of engineering problems
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, presentation and scientific writing) that enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors
  • Strong scholarly record that demonstrates independence and initiative taking

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

Appointments will initially be for 24 months with a possibility of an extension of up to 12 months. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.



Qualifications Desired


  • Experience with ultrasonic sensor and waveguide design
  • Experience with nonlinear ultrasound and resonant ultrasound measurements and modeling
  • Experience with the data analysis methods for ultrasound measurements, including but not limited to statistical methods such as the k-nearest neighbor (kNN) algorithm, principal component analysis (PCA), independent component analysis (ICA), support vector machines (SVMs), and machine-learning-based methods such as deep neural networks (DNNs)
  • Experience with model-based inverse algorithms applied to ultrasound
  • Experience working in Linux environments on large high-performance cluster computing architectures
  • Ability to effectively interface with project managers, contribute to the identification of funding opportunities, and support proposal development
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment and to thoroughly document the work performed
