We Are

The Magnet Systems Department at Fermilab, a world leader in the development of superconducting accelerator magnets, is seeking a motivated individual to fill a Postdoctoral Research Associate position with a focus on Nb3Sn and high-temperature superconducting magnets and associated materials.  The high-field superconducting magnet program at Fermilab is advancing all aspects of the technology for high-field magnets relevant to present and future accelerators.  This program played a leading role in developing the first large scale applications of NbTi accelerator magnets and is a key contributor to the development of a new generation of Nb3Sn accelerator magnets for LHC upgrades and the Future High Energy Proton-Proton Collider.

This position is for a three (3) year term appointment, with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance. The selected candidate is expected to conduct outstanding materials engineering studies of Nb3Sn and high-temperature superconducting wire of which critical current density Jc has recently seen significant improvement. They will also contribute to design, simulation and measurement of prototype high-field magnets, which pose a variety of interesting challenges. The results of his/her studies shall lead to presentations at technical conferences and high-quality research papers published in peer review journals, and/or technical inventions and patents.

You Will

  • Be involved in research and development of superconductors relevant for magnet applications, aiming to improve superconductor performance and solve relevant issues for applications.
  • Perform experiments of heat-treating superconducting wires, characterizing samples using microscopes and PPMS, transport testing at cryogenic temperatures and in high-field magnets, as well as preparing and mounting samples for these experiments.
  • Participate in analyzing the microstructure and properties of superconducting wires, analyzing the root cause of problems and finding solutions, optimizing wire designs.
  • Analyze the collected data and present results to supervisor, other scientists and engineers. Present results at internal group meetings or international workshops and conferences. Publish the data and results in papers and reports. Write proposals to seek funding.
  • Abide by and be responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
  • Respect, understand, and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity.

Requirements

We Are Looking For

  • PhD in Material Science, Physics, Engineering, or related discipline by the time of the appointment.
  • 3 years or more of work experience in superconducting materials for magnet applications.
  • Strong record of recent accomplishments in superconductor R&D as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.
  • Experience in using optical and electron microscopes, furnaces, and PPMS, as well as preparation of samples for these instruments is desired.
  • Experience in transport testing of superconductors at cryogenic temperatures and in high-field magnets, mounting samples on probes, designing of probes is desired.
  • Knowledge in materials science & engineering, superconductivity, and superconducting wire fabrication is desired.
  • Takes initiative; be a self-starter.
