Several postdoctoral positions in molecular beam epitaxy, computational materials science, and inorganic chemical synthesis are available immediately in Physics and Electrical Engineering at Texas State University. These positions will drive several multidisciplinary, 1-2 year projects related to semiconductor growth, silicon photonics, and photovoltaics.

One project involves modeling and growth of dilute germanium carbide alloys such as Ge:C and GeSnC for creating compact semiconductor lasers on silicon chips. One highly desired position would be to synthesize tetrakis(germyl)methane, or (GeH3)4C, for growth of Ge:C by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), using techniques developed in our group. As an alternative or joint project, a candidate may perform ab initio modeling of Ge:C related alloys using VASP to extract critical material properties and improve optoelectronic and electronic device designs.

Another project applies core-shell nanostructure designs of various indirect bandgap semiconductors for efficient, energy-ratcheting upconversion in solar cells. Experience in photonic/electronic device modeling, Group IV (SiGeCSn) or III-V MBE, and device fabrication is highly desirable.

To be a good fit for these positions, candidates should be self-motivated, creative, entrepreneurial (actively finding solutions when problems arise), good communicators, and good mentors to graduate and undergraduate students. The candidate should hold a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, such as Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science. The ideal candidate will have a solid conceptual understanding as well as experience in either computational materials modeling (VASP), high purity precursor synthesis, or semiconductor epitaxy and fabrication.

Requirements

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science/Engineering, or a related field.

Solid conceptual understanding as well as experience in either computational materials modeling (VASP), high purity precursor synthesis, or semiconductor epitaxy and fabrication.

Strong mentoring and communication skills.
