We have an opening for an engineer with a background in the oil and natural gas industry, and an emphasis on modeling and simulation of oil and gas pipeline systems. You will contribute to research projects in the Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience (CIR) program in the Global Security (GS) Principal Associate Directorate. You will participate in collaborations with Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in support of CIRs growing research portfolio in the cyber-security and physical security of the nations critical oil and gas infrastructure. This position is programmatically in Global Securitys E Program and administratively in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.Essential Duties
- Provide engineering solutions for research projects with competing priorities, implement research concepts in a multidisciplinary team environment where commitments and deadlines are important to success.
- Partner with other LLNL scientists and engineers to bring research results to practical use in LLNL Global Security programs.
- Develop cross-domain strategies for increased security and resiliency of critical infrastructure, working with researchers in other disciplines.
- Collaborate with other CIR program area leads in developing CIR program research roadmap.
- Develop internal and external collaborations and provide input for securing funding sources to meet program goals and objectives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Lead and support multiple projects/tasks and priorities of customers and partners to ensure deadlines are met. Collaborate in the development of innovative methods and technology.
- Lead various complex projects and leverage team members skills to complete complex projects. Serve as a mentor for other staff and assist in recruiting efforts.
- Serve as a primary technical point of contact with sponsors and partners. Participate in development of new program business including attracting and retaining projects, programs, and funding.Qualifications
- Masters degree in engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: steady-state and transient analysis of pipeline systems, pipeline facility design and optimization, pipeline facility automation.
- Broad experience with pipeline modeling and simulation tools such as Synergi Gas, Synergi Pipeline Simulator (SPS), WinFlow, PIPE-FLO, or PipelineStudio.
- Comprehensive record of technical achievement.
- Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with contending priorities, as well as approaching difficult problems with enthusiasm and creativity to change focus when necessary.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate comprehensive knowledge effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and to non-experts and the interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment.In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Significant oil and gas engineering experience and advanced knowledge of and experience in modeling and simulation of pipeline systems.
- Experience leading projects and working independently while effectively managing concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities.
- Experience writing research proposals and securing sponsor funding, with advanced interpersonal, verbal, and written skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, and provide advice to management.Desired Qualifications
- PhD in engineering or a related field.
- Experience in control systems, ICS processes, and facility design strongly preferred.
- Experience working with utilities, Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, and other relevant government agencies.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
