We have an opening for a Physics Research Scientistin the fields of electromagnetics (EM) and EM-ionospheric interactions. You will apply expertise to improve existing kinetic and magneto-hydrodynamic simulation codes, apply those simulation codes towards a variety of applications, assist in developing framework for incorporation of risk posture into simulation codes, and interact nationally with other Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDC) and government labs. This position is in the Applied Physics Section of the Physics Division.
Essential Duties
- Characterize, simulate, and improve the ionosphere and interaction on electromagnetics such as electromagnetic pulse E3 and HF wave propagation.
- Work to develop a framework for adding risk posture to simulation codes.
- Interact and lead scientific collaborations with other National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) labs, FFRDC, and government labs.
- Work independently on complex technical tasks requiring in-depth data analysis and develop unique technical solutions.
- Present formal and informal overview of research progress at weekly meetings.
- Communicate results to internal and external audiences ranging from peers to sponsoring organizations via written technical reports and presentations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- PhD in applied physics or a related field,orthe equivalent combination of education and related experience.
-Significant experienceand advanced knowledge in ionosphere characterization and ionosphere-electromagnetic interactions.
-Significant experiencewith electromagnetically-relevant infrastructure ranging from small scale integrated circuits to large power equipment for electric transmission.
- Ability to work independently on technical tasks, influence technical objectives, to provide in depth analysis, and develop unique technical solutions.
- Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers and other technical and administrative staff.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment, prepare written reports and present and explain technical information.
Desired
- Experience with high-altitude nuclear explosions on modern communication systems.
- Experience with optimization problems.
- Experience with large scale interrogation projects of ionosphere.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.If you are selected, we willinitiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
