Job Description

The Photonics Engineer in the RF Photonics and Advanced Materials (RFPAM) Division will advance and mature state-of-the-art integrated circuits that interact with electromagnetic signals. The position will focus on research and development of Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFICs) and/or photonic IC (PICs) technology-enabled through a diverse set of material systems, including Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS)-based silicon, silicon germanium (SiGe), and compound semiconductors (InP, GaAs, GaN and their associated ternary and quaternary compositions).

Additionally, the position will perform electronic, radio frequency, millimeter-wave, and photonics design and development to achieve technological breakthroughs through a broad skill set covering numerous stages of the fabrication process, including simulation, design, layout, packaging, and characterization of ICs, as well as integration into higher-level systems (such as board-level, component-level, and systems-level). The photonics engineer works as part of a broad team of researchers to innovate new concepts, identify technology stakeholders, and execute challenging research in the national interest.

Job Duties

  • Perform research in the fields of photonic integrated circuits and advanced microelectronics
  • Design Radio Frequency (RF) photonic integrated circuit designs using common printed circuit board (PCB) tools (Altium designer, cadence, etc.) and perform RF photonic component and system simulation via OptSim and RSoft software tools
  • Support photonic prototyping efforts through defining architectures, deriving system requirements, and assisting in prototype assembly and testing
  • Utilize common RF/optical test equipment including spectrum analyzers, power meters, and signal analyzers to verify designs and performance in lab and field environments
  • Support business development activities among Department of Defense (DoD) program offices through preparing proposals and white papers
  • Integrate RF/Analog devices with other board and system-level components/modules
  • Develop technical reports and presentations
  • Lead team review of final deliverables
  • Communicate technical objectives and justification to external sponsors and internal leadership
  • Lead small to mid-sized tasks, projects, and/or research teams
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Physics Engineering, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Astrophysics, Astronomy, or related technical field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Physics Engineering, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Astrophysics, Astronomy, or related technical field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Physics Engineering, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Astrophysics, Astronomy, or related technical field.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Physics Engineering, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Astrophysics, Astronomy, or related technical field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Physics Engineering, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Astrophysics, Astronomy, or related technical field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Physics Engineering, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Astrophysics, Astronomy, or related technical field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Doctoral degree program relevant to this position will be considered
  • Experience with microwave photonic theory and components
  • Experience using common optical test equipment (spectrum analyzers, power meters, and signal analyzers)
  • Experience with RF photonic component and system simulation software (RSoft, PhoenIX, etc.)
  • Experience with PCB design/layout tools (Altium Designer, Cadence, etc.)
  • Experience supporting microwave photonics experiments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with MATLAB and Python
  • Experience in RF, digital, firmware, or embedded software design
  • Experience communicating technical ideas to a non-technical audience
  • Experience leading research projects and/or teams

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
