We are looking for a PCI Express Architect for the Macintosh System Architecture team.

The architect will be an individual contributor & will work with cross-functional groups to define requirements, discover and identify improvements, debug issues and qualify solutions involving PCIe architecture, design implementations and validation.

Key Qualifications

  • BS EE/CS with 8-10 years of industrial experience
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding for the PCIe Specification including areas such as:
  • Link and transaction level packet and data flow architecture
  • Link and controller power management
  • System topologies
  • Familiarity with the physical layer behavior and requirements
  • Design experience with a PCIe controller. This would ideally include design of an original PCIE root port, endpoint or switch controller. For experience with off-the-shelf designs, a deep understanding of the controller behavior must be demonstrated.
  • Possess a strong understanding of computer architecture and how PCIe contributes to the system and its behavior, including:
  • Understanding the operation of caches, transaction and data coherency, system memory controller, memory management units, and quality of service
  • Understanding the interaction between Link States (L0, L1...) and system power states
  • PCIe enumeration process and the assignment of system resources
  • PCIe device driver behavior. Direct experience with the development or specification of drivers is preferred.
  • Ability to work with third party vendors to define requirements and shape their offering to align with system goals. Ability to work with internal software and hardware teams to diagnose and address interoperability issues with third party devices.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional engineering teams as well as in executive meetings.
  • Ability to articulate and represent a clear point of view and navigate groups with conflicting requirements to negotiate high quality outcomes.
  • Ability to advise teams exploring the use of PCIe in different product groups within Apple
  • Preferred Tools:
  • Experience with PCIe bus analyzers is critical, including analyzing traces to facilitate debug and diagnosis of functional or performance issues.

Description

Provide hardware architectural guidance to cross-functional architecture and engineering teams and establish new product requirements.

Analyze architectural and implementation trade-offs; define system design parameters and participate in writing system specifications.

Collaborate with cross-functional engineering managers and architects on hardware, software and manufacturing technologies and methodologies; become a spokesperson for the system architecture group

Review, challenge, and influence system performance decisions.
Analyze large complex data sets and summarize critical conclusions

Present design and engineering work in Executive and Engineering meetings.

The role may require occasional domestic and international travel.

Education & Experience

BS EE/CS with 8-10 years of industrial experience
