Part Time Occupational Health Registered Nurse, CASE MANAGER

We have an opening for a Nurse COVID Case Manager.

This position works as part of a team that monitors communication from LLNL employees and works to prevent transmission of COVID-19 through testing, restrictions for quarantine or isolation and contact tracing. You may also develop and deliver occupational health injury and illness services, medical surveillance, health maintenance/education programs if requested. You will maintain documentation on COVID cases and possible cases, illness exposed employees and ill employees as you help them navigate any requirements to return to work. You will clinically assess ill employees, answer questions by telephone, email or other modalities. You will work directly under the leadership of the COVID CM team lead and the Lead Physician in order to apply standardized guidance for each employee – you will also need to identify special clinical situations and reach out to higher medical authorities for resolution.

This position has the potential to be remote, however daily on-site presence is required during training and may be required for other clinical support or testing functions. This position is in the Health Services Department within the Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Assess, analyze and evaluate occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses, and initiate appropriate clinical treatments.
  • Monitor communications by telephone email and other methods. Actively seek out and respond to patient communications in a timely efficient manner.
  • Present a professional and empathetic persona while supporting patients by telephone and other communications.
  • Document information into a database, as well as learn and use Webchart as an electronic medical record.
  • Provide technical leadership and over site of the work of medical technicians, or administrative support and independently verify that correct action is being performed for each patient.
  • Assure facility and work activity safety risks are identified and managed to preserve and protect the health and safety of HSD staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE L-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
  • Possess a valid California Registered Nurse license or the ability to obtain CA license within reasonable amount of time.
  • Clinical nursing experience in case management, occupational health, emergency room or urgent care setting.
  • Proficient with computer systems including Microsoft Excel, Electronic Medical Records and willingness and comfort to learn new electronic systems.
  • Possess or eligible for current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as a team member with strong effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated advanced interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact effectively with a diverse workforce.

Qualifications We Desire

  • COHN (Certified Occupational Health Nurse), CCM(Certified Case Manager), or other advanced certification.
  • Certified in Spirometry and Audiometry.
  • Proficient with phlebotomy and intravenous therapy.
  • Experience in disability case management.


Position Information

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years.
