We have an opening for a Optometrist to provide LLNL workers with safety glasses, including general industry safety glasses, laser safety glasses and ergonomically-correct computer glasses. You will work within Laboratory policies and DOE requirements, as well as state and federal laws and regulations. This position includes providing consultation to integrate needs of the employee, organization, and work unit to minimize work-site impact while maintaining continuity and quality of care. The Optometrist will interact with all levels of LLNL personnel. This position is in the Health Services Department's Employee Assistance Program (EAP), within the ES&H Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Review and modify client prescriptions, ensuring that prescriptions for glasses are appropriate for indicated industrial settings as well as document any related justification or instruction for special needs or concerns.
  • Advise a wide range of clients in the selection of frames to meet appropriate safety standards and fit safety glasses on clients.
  • Evaluate multi-focal lens configurations to determine proper lens form and use.
  • Diagnose vision-related ergonomics problems and adjust design of lenses to resolve them.
  • Oversee the programmatic operation of the Safety Glasses Office.
  • Do independent research in the use of safety lenses/glasses in special equipment and/or for hazardous situations, analyze the results and implement changes.
  • Serve on the Ergonomics Task Force making recommendations on Industrial Vision issues.
  • Counsel employees on workstation use, simulating actual individual workstation configuration to determine appropriate improvements
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE L-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree.
  • Must have a valid California Optometrist License or the ability to attain a CA license within a reasonable amount of time.
  • Extensive experience in practice of Optometry in an industrial setting.
  • Experience with vision ergonomics.
  • Experience with various types of industrial safety glasses.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Effective skills in organizing and prioritizing work. Verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with clients and to prepare clear and concise documentation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with varying levels of personnel

Security Clearance
