Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for an Optoelectronics Engineer with hands-on experience researching, designing, developing, testing, and fielding distributed fiber optic networks for maintaining precision timing in the National Ignition Facility (NIF). NIF is the largest and most energetic laser facility, the most precise and reproducible laser, as well as the worlds largest optical instrument. The laser has nearly 40,000 optics that precisely guide, reflect, amplify, and focus 192 laser beams onto a fusion target about the size of a pencil eraser. You will be responsible for providing support in a multi-disciplinary team to develop, deploy and maintain state-of-the art trigger and timing systems that control all aspects of the NIF laser system and target diagnostics. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate. This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.Essential Duties
- Research, design, develop, commission, and operate electro-optic equipment and cross-timing systems.
- Perform periodic maintenance activities on the cross-timing system. Responsibilities include performance evaluation, calibration (offline and online), troubleshooting and supporting off-normal occurrences, data analysis, data archiving and developing test reports and analysis presentations.
- Interpret cross-timing requirements; create and verify timing diagrams.
- Acquire and analyze large sets of moderately complex data using computer-based data acquisition and controls.
- Interact with a large computer control system, through graphical user interfaces (GUIS), to commission, operate and maintain various diagnostics and controls.
- Write, interpret, and prepare data and document test results, identify moderately complex problems, and suggest solutions.
- Prepare engineering documentation under general direction and participate in engineering design reviews.
- Interface with immediate supervisors, and project leads or other exempt professionals in the group or division to complete various projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Apply engineering principals in the development of the cross-timing system designs. Activities include planning work activities, collaborating with stakeholders to develop requirements, designing and building hardware prototypes, executing instrumentation performance evaluation, installation, commissioning, and documentation.
- Perform complex analysis of the cross-timing system and present data to a peer review team with recommendations to enhance system performance.
- Develop strategic planning, serve as a subject matter expert for the cross-timing system.
- Provide engineering solutions to resolve moderately complex to complex technical and programmatic issues.Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Fundamental knowledge of electro-optical equipment such as optical fibers, sources, detectors, sensors, lasers, characterization equipment; collecting, analyzing, interpreting data; writing test plans, documenting test results, and generating reports.
- Fundamental knowledge of digital timing systems and pulsed laser characterization.
- Fundament knowledge of probability and statistics.
- Knowledge of analytical software such as MATLAB or IDL.
- Possess the decision making and analytical skills necessary to independently (under general direction) anticipate, analyze, and provide solutions to problems of limited complexity, while adhering to well defined practices and procedures.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Experience identifying, defining, and solving moderately complex to complex problems in a timely, cost effective manner.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with solid state laser physics and technology and ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities under limited direction.
- Experience in systems engineering.Desired Qualifications
- Experience supporting a 24/7 operations facility.
