We have an opening for an Optics and Photonics Engineer Academic Graduate Appointee. You will work under the guidance of staff members to execute design, fabrication, and testing of laser-based devices and sensors for projects that support national security programs. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role, you will

  • Work under general guidance of staff in areas such as optics, photonics, lasers, and micro and nanofabrication.
  • Conduct, analyze, and present data from experiments to develop and improve the understanding of materials.
  • Perform modeling, design, and microfabrication of optical systems.
  • Support design, development, and assembly of optical.
  • Conduct electo-optical and analytical testing of optical and laser systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field.
  • Broad general background in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field demonstrated by coursework, training, and/or work experience.
  • Experience with design and operation of lasers and measurements of optical devices, and data analysis.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, document analyses and prepare, present and explain technical information and publications.
  • Strong initiative, interpersonal skills, creativity, and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with one or more of the following areas: semiconductor devices, electrical characterization, and microscopy.
  • Experience with computer and simulation tools such as COMSOL, Lumerical, Zemax, Code V, SolidWorks, and AutoCad
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, Java, and C++.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.
