Job Description

This job is for a full-time research faculty position in the Opto-Electronics (OE) Branch in the Electro-Optical Systems Innovation Division (EOSID) with the Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory (EOSL) at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). 

The main responsibility will be providing active and passive electro-optical systems-level expertise. This highly technical position is expected to contribute to and identify novel EO/IR sensing modalities, analyze and develop prototype optical systems and associated algorithms, and identify electro-optical hardware/software components (lenses, telescopes, modulators, detectors, amplifiers, computing architectures, etc.) required to implement the aforementioned systems.

EOSID’s research is performed in all areas of the imaging chain. From basic geometric/radiometric modeling and analysis, through design and fabrication, to test and evaluation in the field, our team provides subject matter expertise to our customers in order to solve their most challenging problems. Our portfolio consists of research programs in and related to the following application areas: Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR); Undersea Warfare; Atmospheric Optics; Tactical Imaging, e.g. Degraded Visual Environments (DVE); Automatic Target Recognition; Intelligence Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination (PED); Free-space Optical Communications; Space Situational Awareness (SSA); Tagging, Tracking, and Locating (TTL); Remote Sensing; etc.

Duties related to this position are listed below with the estimated amount of time spent at each task:

  • Lead and contribute to key technical efforts in the analysis, construction, and design of optical systems. (65%)
  • Document work in memoranda, sponsor briefs, conference proceedings, and journal articles.  Brief senior leadership and sponsors as required. (15%)
  • Support field integration, data collection, and other testing activities at test sites and facilities (travel may be required).  (10%)
  • Participate in new business development efforts by contributing to white papers, RFI/RFP responses, and sponsor briefs, and by proposing new research areas suitable for internal research and development (IR&D) funding.  (10%)

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering and four (4) years of relevant full time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates should have experience, education, peer-reviewed publications, and/or expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Active and Passive Imaging Systems
  • Coherent and Incoherent Imaging and Optical Remote Sensing Techniques (Synthetic Aperture LIDAR - SAL, Laser vibrometry, Holography, Optical Coherence Tomography, etc.)
  • Augmented/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) Systems
  • Topographic/Bathymetric LIDAR
  • Multi-modal detectors
  • Focal Plane Arrays
  • Holographic and Planar Optics
  • Digital Signal Processing (Image, Hyperspectral, Point Cloud, etc.)
  • Multi-sensor fusion techniques
  • Geomatics/Geospatial Intelligence
  • Advanced linear algebra, numerical methods, probability & statistics, and optimization mathematical skills

Additionally, candidates should have experience with one or more of the following:

  • Programming/scripting in Matlab, Octave, Python, etc.
  • Implementing algorithms in C/C++, CUDA
  • Linux - Red Hat, Ubuntu, CentOS
  • Embedded hardware/software design
  • Optical breadboarding
  • Zemax
  • Detector characterization
  • Computer architecture and high throughput system design
  • Clearly communicating technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Project management or task leadership skills

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
