Job Description

The IFS team is looking for a passionate and driven individual to help define and build complex systems with highly integrated mechanical, electrical, thermal, vacuum and control requirements. This individual will be a member of a new project team working alongside internal/external partners to design and build new modules. The position involves both leading and supporting projects from concept definition, detailed design, process and test development, prototyping and qualification phases, through to implementation into manufacturing.

We are looking for an experienced Optoelectronic Engineer to join the multidisciplinary development team to support the design, development and packaging of advanced optical electronic/optical/photonic components, modules and sub-systems. You will work to provide design solutions and select key optical and microelectronic technologies and integration strategies that align with project requirements. Development activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design optical components such as photodiodes, amplifiers, receivers and interconnects with consideration for all design elements (packaging, integration, optical and RF/electrical, mechanical, thermal, assembly, test and reliability). Define and develop advanced packaging and integration solutions for compact, efficient and high performance optoelectronic and microelectronic products.

  • Perform optical modelling, including free space and guided wave, and optical system performance simulations.

  • Perform optical and optomechanical tolerance analysis to assess practical performance capability. Work with thermal-structural engineering to assess impact on optical performance.

  • Select and characterize active and passive optical components for high speed optoelectronic design.

  • Define specifications/requirements for outsourced custom components and coordinate/interface with manufacturers/suppliers.

  • Define and implement processes for active and passive optical alignment and related integration approaches on advanced optical assembly equipment, and bonding strategies and algorithms for customized optical assembly processes and equipment.

  • Support prototype builds and engineering product verification through hands on engagement.

  • Design optical interconnections between fibers and integrated circuits

Behavioral traits that we are looking for:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and clarity in technical communications.

  • Results oriented self-starter with the ability to work independently, and an aptitude for hands on problem solving.

  • Proven ability to lead technical projects, working with multi-functional and cross-site groups.

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related discipline with 3+ years of experience

  • 3+ years experience in optical IC design

Preferred qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a technical lead for large and small groups in a global team environment

  • Experience leading external supplier projects

  • Experience with packaging and micro-integration

  • Expertise in design and development of optical products, from concept through to volume manufacturing

  • Experience in a broad range of optical and microelectronic technologies, materials, components, assembly and test processes

  • Experience with latest optical design and modelling tools and techniques
