The Planetary Habitability and Technology Laboratory (schmidt.astro.cornell.edu), part of the Cornell Center for Astrophysics and Planetary Science and Cornell College of Engineering is seeking to fill up to three Research Engineering positions. The successful candidate(s) will work with Professor Britney Schmidt and a vibrant team of scientists and engineers to refine and improve electrical and embedded systems and/or software for field-based robotics programs, and conduct field research. This will facilitate vehicle decision making, mission planning and autonomy on robotic and remote sensing platforms and improve data management and processing. The candidate will be expected to conduct field work for typically 3-4 months at a time, often annually, depending on research program funding. We are looking for a dynamic, teamwork driven colleague who is excited to push the frontier of Earth and planetary exploration. The successful applicant will join an engaged community that includes scientists, engineers, students, and field specialists that collaborate in a truly interdisciplinary manner.

Requirements
The successful candidate will have the following desired skills and/or familiarity with:
- Embedded software development
- C/C++/Python/ROS/ROS2/MOOS software familiarity
- Printed Circuit Board design
- Power system design
- General electrical/computing system building/design/debugging.
- Linux operations
- Advanced robotics controls, dynamics, and navigation
- Signal and image Processing (especially sonar)
- Sensor and data integration
- Computer vision
- Deep learning / neural networks
- Robotics / Autonomy
- LCM (Lightweight Communications and Marshalling or similar publish/subscribe communications framework
A bachelor’s degree with 3 years of experience, or advanced degree in engineering is required. The individual must be able to attend long (~3
month) deployments to Antarctica or other location several times in the coming three to four years. The ability to work in close teams is a
requirement for the position. Prior field-based development and operational experience is highly desired. The ideal candidate will hold a degree in
a related discipline, with advanced degrees desired, and have demonstrable experience with designing and implementing hardware and software
for embedded systems as well as low and high level controls and other software development for underwater vehicles, or related technologies.
