Nuclear Physics - Postdoctoral Researcher

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Livermore, CA 94550

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening in the Nuclear and Particle Physics Group for a Postdoctoral Researcher to play a major role in developing and conducting low-energy nuclear-physics experiments that use the surrogate-reaction method to measure nuclear-reaction cross sections that are of importance to nuclear astrophysics, stockpile stewardship, and nuclear energy. This research will make use of a low energy particle accelerator facility, where you will set up and conduct experiments. At this facility, you will collect high-resolution particle and gamma-ray spectra with a highly segmented HPGe detector array. You will develop analysis tools and techniques and work with nuclear theorists to evaluate neutron-capture cross sections of interest from the data. You will also assist with other low-energy nuclear-physics experiments. This position is in the Nuclear and Particle Physics Group within the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct charged-particle-beam irradiations of isotopes of interest at an accelerator facility.
- Perform charged-particle and gamma-ray spectroscopy.
- Set up and troubleshoot electronics related to digital and analog data-acquisition systems.
- Develop data-analysis tools and techniques to interpret the results of the experiments.
- Directly work with nuclear theory to interpret the results of the experiments.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings
- Provide technical contributions to the development of future nuclear physics experiments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in a nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, nuclear engineering, or related field.
- Knowledge of accelerator-based nuclear-physics experiments and/or neutron irradiations.
- Experience with highly segmented charged-particle and gamma-ray detectors, spectroscopy, and their associated data analysis.
- Knowledge of programming in C/C++ and/or other programming languages.
- Experience performing analysis using ROOT.
- Experience performing simulations with GEANT4 or MCNP.
- Experience with digital and analog electronics for data acquisition systems, specifically NIM and VME electronics
- Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature in nuclear physics, nuclear astrophyiscs, or a related field.
- Experience working collaboratively as part of a focused team.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: None required.

However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check. (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)

Note: This is a 2 year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of 3 years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
