We are looking for Nuclear Operation Engineers. You will provide engineering technical support for LLNL nuclear and radiological facilities (e.g., Radiography Facility, Hardened Engineering Test Building, Tritium Facility, Plutonium Facility, the Waste Storage Facilities, and Decontamination and Waste Treatment Facility (DWTF)) and explosives facilities (e.g., Site 300, HEAF). The facilities support DOE programs involving fissile materials disposition, dismantlement, verification technologies, stockpile stewardship, and radioactive waste storage and disposal. These positions are in the Safety Basis Division (SBD).

Essential Duties

- Independently review and contribute to various technical documents depending on the specific appointment, division or program (e.g., safety basis calculations, Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) documents, Documented Safety Analyses (DSAs), Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs).
- Use fundamental technical knowledge and established procedures to evaluate the structures, systems, components, processes, materials, wastes, and/or potential energy sources used in facilities, identify hazards, postulate credible accidents, consider regulatory compliance, provide solutions, develop appropriate engineering and/or administrative controls; monitor and support the operational status of facility systems.
- Provide technical solutions and support to programs and customers using standard techniques and methodologies.
- Perform technical/scientific assignments of limited complexity that require independent analysis and creativity, and provide technical support to engineers and scientists in scientific research and development projects and/or ongoing operations.
- Gather and analyze data and information in support of the work activity and deliver results in the form of documents, calculations, recommendations, corrective actions, and designs.
- Participate in research, maintenance, and/or operational planning and evaluation discussions.
- Attend relevant seminars and/or conferences in order to stay current on the latest technology, present research outcomes, and participate in networking activity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.


- Bachelors degree in Engineering (e.g., nuclear, mechanical, chemical, or general engineering) or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Fundamental knowledge of and experience working in support of a nuclear facility, nuclear reactor, chemical, hazardous or radiological operations.
- Experience with supporting facility or experimental operations, including structures, systems, processes, materials, and energy sources.
- Experience with relevant types of analysis (e.g., failure analysis, diagnostics, risk and hazard analysis, accident scenario development, source term evaluation, failure mechanism assessment, calculation of accident consequences, evaluation of probability of occurrence).
- Ability to prepare technical documents following appropriate NOD analytical protocols (e.g., safety basis calculations, USQDs,).
- Fundamental knowledge of DOE Orders and national standards and regulations as applicable, e.g., 10 CFR 830, Nuclear Safety Management, NRC requirements, commercial codes and standards (e.g., ASME AG-1, ANSI standards), industry regulations, or engineering practices.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively in a collaborative work environment and to document, present and/or explain technical or operational information and work results.

Desired Qualifications

- Experience in LLNLs safety analysis.
- Experience interpreting and implementing Laboratory policies, procedures, and practices related to the work assignment.
- Familiarity with supporting LLNLs facility or experimental operations, including structures, systems, processes, materials, wastes, and energy sources. This may include ventilation systems and their components (e.g., HEPA filters) or waste storage issues.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
