Nuclear Forensics Analysis and Signatures - Academic Graduate Appointee

We have an opening for an Academic Graduate Appointee (AGA) to assist with the Nuclear Compliance Verification Analytical Sample Analysis Program (NCV-ASAP). Your work involves developing an understanding of various nuclear forensics measurements and signatures for a variety of sample types and applying that knowledge to the development of analytical plans in support of NCV sampling missions. The work will include both laboratory-based measurements of uranium materials as well as data analytics. This opportunity is in the Chemical and Isotopic Sciences group in the Nuclear and Chemicals Sciences Division (NACS) and will provide the experience to prepare you to successfully pursue advanced graduate studies.

In this role you will

  • Process and prepare uranium samples for XRF, microRaman and combustion ion chromatography
  • Assist in the development of ASAP planning and products including sample triage, laboratory selection, and data management strategies.
  • Interact with NACS staff to perform these analyses for multiple programmatic sponsors.
  • Keep an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook to ensure results are properly annotated and organized for reports.
  • Present formal and informal overviews of analytical process flow at group meetings.
  • Interact with and support Chemical and Isotopic Signatures group members and the principal investigator on multiple projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree in Geochemistry, Chemistry or related discipline.
  • Experience with sample preparation techniques for ion chromatography.
  • Experience with selective extraction media and chromatographic separation methods.
  • Experience with programming languages including R and Java.
  • Experience with critical data record-keeping in a laboratory environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment and to document and present research results.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Familiarity with DOE Nuclear Compliance Verification Program.
  • Experience with gamma spectroscopy including the use of HPGe detectors and interpretation of data.
