We are looking for Nuclear Criticality Safety Engineers. You will provide technical support for LLNL nuclear and radiological facilities (e.g., Plutonium Facility, Radiography Facility, Hardened Engineering Test Building, and the Waste Storage Facilities) and nuclear explosives facilities (e.g., National Nuclear Security Site, Device Assembly Facility). The facilities support DOE programs involving fissile materials, stockpile stewardship, and radioactive waste storage and disposal, and research programs (e.g., the DOE Nuclear Criticality Safety Program). This position is in the Nuclear Criticality Safety Division (NCSD).

Essential Duties
- Compete formal training requirements to qualify as an LLNL criticality safety engineer.
- Review, develop, and provide input to various technical documents implementing the LLNL Nuclear Criticality Safety Program.
- Perform inspections and reviews of operations in nuclear and radiological facilities for conformance with criticality safety controls and best practices.
- Provide criticality safety guidance to operations, program, and facility management and staff.
- Perform criticality safety evaluations in accordance with DOE-STD-3007.
- Participate in research, maintenance, and/or operational planning and evaluation discussions.
- Attend relevant seminars and/or conferences in order to stay current on the latest technology, present research outcomes, and participate in networking activity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Bachelors degree in Engineering (e.g., nuclear engineering, engineering physics), Physics, Health Physics, or Chemistry (e.g., radiochemistry) or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience performing nuclear or radiological operations conducted in accordance with written procedures, or preparing such procedures.
- Experience with particle transport codes (e.g., COG, MCNP, NJOY, SCALE).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
- Ability to prepare and give technical presentations and communicate complex nuclear engineering concepts to technical and nontechnical audiences.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of DOE Orders, national standards (e.g., ANSI/ANS-8 series), regulations (e.g., 10 CFR 830), and good engineering practices.
- Previous experience and qualification in a DOE-approved Nuclear Criticality Safety Program.
- Previous experience in criticality safety or related field such as reactor physics, nuclear physics, radiation protection, or the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
- Previous experience working in a nuclear facility, radiological facility, or laboratory.
- Advanced degree (e.g., MS, PhD) or professional registration.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
