Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for Postdoctoral Researchers in the Nondestructive Evaluation Group. You will apply experimental tools and analytical methods to understand structure and properties of uniform or nonuniform articles, often topologically complex and extremely heterogeneous. Characterization techniques which are of particular utility in this work include interrogation with x-rays (especially with computed tomography), acoustic (ultrasonic) or electromagnetic or optical probes. You will perform independent research in support of existing dynamic projects and assist with the development of new projects and capabilities. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in and development of one or more of the following areas: x-ray imaging, ultrasound, optical or microwave characterization, computed tomography and metrology.
- Design, implement, and analyze techniques in one or more of the above areas.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering or related field.
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: x-ray imaging, acoustics and ultrasound, signal processing, image processing, microwave characterization, computed tomography, holography and reconstruction methods.
- Ability to work as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution; or demonstrated ability with signal processing, machine learning, modeling, data analysis including reconstruction for computed tomography.
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with x-ray imaging, including absorption, phase, coherent and incoherent scatter.
- Experience with computed tomography.
- Experience with experimental acoustics, DAQ instrumentation, especially ultrasonic array signal processing.
- Experience with microwave characterization, especially microwave interferometry and imaging.
- Experience with signal processing, machine learning, modeling, large data set analysis.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires either no security clearance, or a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level or Q-level clearance depending on the particular assignment.

If you are selected and a security clearance is required, wewillinitiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. L and Q-level clearances require U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is aone year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum ofthree years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
