For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Laser Physicist to support the NIF Beam Line Integrated Performance (BLIP) team, with emphasis on the physics and modeling of solid-state laser systems. You will analyze laser data, perform laser simulations and interpret the results to validate the NIF laser performance against models and goals, and ensure machine safety, collaborating with a team of physicists and computer scientists to develop and employ state-of-the art object-oriented scientific software, real-time data visualization systems for device setup and control, and database methods for data archiving, retrieval, display and trending. This position is in the Laser Modeling & Analysis Group (LMAG) in Laser Science and Systems Engineering (LSSE), within the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and Photon Science Principal Directorate.

Essential Duties

- Design and model moderately complex to complex integrated experiments from beam propagation, amplification and nonlinear interactions conduced on the NIF laser or other off-line facilities.
- Collaborate with laboratory scientists and engineers to perform hands-on experiments and interpret results that test new physics and modeling capability under limited guidance.
- Participate off-line calibration of laser diagnostics and deploy them on the NIF laser system to characterize the laser performance.
- Participate on the on-call NIF Beam Line Integrated Performance (BLIP) team to review, validate and monitor NIF laser performance for target physics experiments.
- Process moderately complex to complex data, perform simulation and data interpretation in the context of laser experiments, performance optimization and machine safety.
- Collaborate with NIF Users to optimize the laser requirements and mitigate any risk for a diverse group of high energy density science experiments.
- Act as a representative of a working group to coordinate with the NIF Facility in terms of assessing laser machine safety.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- PhD in Laser Physics (short-pulse, nonlinear optics, or solid-state lasers) or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
- Broad experience and comprehensive knowledge in laser physics and nonlinear optics as applied to laser development, laser architecture design and operations.
- Broad experience and comprehensive knowledge in nonlinear optical effects, especially second and third order effects (Kerr).
- Comprehensive problem solving, decision making, and analytical skills, necessary to anticipate, analyze, advise, recommend, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions to moderately complex to complex issues or laser designs.
- Ability to write beam propagation, nonlinear optics, or amplification codes
- Broad experience and comprehensive knowledge in signal and image processing of laser diagnostics signals.
- Track record of accomplishment in scientific research and development.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills necessary to author technical and scientific reports and publications, deliver scientific presentations, and interact with a diverse group.

Desired Qualifications

- Experience in the development of scientific software.
- Knowledge of laser architectures, technological limitations and machine safety aspects of large, distributed, high energy and high peak power laser facilities.
- Knowledge of the goals, technologies, and operational procedures of LLNL's NIF laser.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.For additional information, please see DOE Order 472.2.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
