We have an opening for a Systems Engineer to provide technical leadership for a large portfolio of National Security projects, focused on delivering advanced capabilities to the Department of Defense (DoD). You will also have a lead systems engineering role in scaling up the Diode-Pumped Alkali Laser (DPAL) system. This position will report programmatically to the DoD Technologies (DoDT) Program Director. This position is in the DoDT Programs of the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Principal Associate Directorate (PAD).

Essential Duties
- Manage, planand execute systems engineering efforts across the DoDT program portfolio of national security projects.
- Direct concurrent execution of multiple technically and scientifically challenging systems engineering projects with competing goals and scope to continually improve organizational performance and reliability to include scaling up the DPAL and other laser technologies for Directed Energy applications.
- Manage proposal reviews for new projects to ensure scope, schedule, budget, staffing and facility requirements are identified and integrated with existing activities.
- Establish strategic directions to maintain a program-wide culture of best practices in systems engineering, providing responsible oversight of project design reviews and verifying that project solutions will meet customer needs and requirements.
- Oversee planning, tracking and reporting of program status to the DoDT Program Director.
- Collaborate with sponsors to adapt technologies and designs to specific mission requirements.
- Negotiate with senior management within the principal directorate and/or internal/external customers/sponsors about the systems engineering progress and performance on NIF.
- Manage and mentor engineers in the use of sound systems engineering practices in accordance with NIF&PS and Engineering policies, and in the development of proposals, Statements of Work, project plans, and major procurement packages.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Masters degree in Physics, Nuclear Engineering or other technical area, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Extensive technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas: systems engineering, opto-mechanical systems, optical sensors, mission analysis.
- Extensive experience in project management, including organizing, managing, and tracking schedule, budget, and milestones for highly visible and high-risk/payoff projects.
- Expert knowledge of leadership, management, and organizational development principles to lead and achieve unit objectives and meet Laboratory, Department of Energy (DOE), and customer/sponsor requirements.
- Extensive experience leading or participating in formal engineering design review processes and implementing the Engineering Design Safety Standards or an equivalent industry design standard.
- Extensive experience planning and directing work with technical objectives, estimating effort, setting milestones, and managing within designated budget.
- Expert communication, facilitation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills necessary to direct an organization, lead innovative systems engineering efforts, and interact with management and customers/sponsors on a wide variety of management-level technical and highly complex issues.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience interfacing with the Department of Defense sponsors.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
