We have an opening for a Deputy Radiation Safety Officer (DRSO). You will provide direction technical guidance to the Radiological Operations (Rad Ops) Program in support of the National Ignition Facility, a 24/7 operation. This will include ensuring proper radiographical controls are in place. This position is in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF & PS) Principle Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the TSS.2 or TSS.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Manage the calibration and maintenance of radiological and beryllium measurement and detection equipment..
- Prepare health physics lab documentation to ensure that records are complete, accurate, and meet both NIF and regulatory requirements.
- Act as a technical writer to update, author, and/or review Rad Ops procedures, Radiation Work Permits (RWPs), NIF Operations Work Permits relating to radiological operations, Safety Basis, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation, and Survey Plans.
- Provide classroom instruction to Rad Ops personnel regarding radiological operations and controls.
- Support the Radiation Security Officer (RSO) in the day-to-day managementproviding technical guidance and informal mentoring of the NIF Radiation Control Technicians (RCTs) to assure timely and effective radiological support of NIF Operations.
- Provide real-time evaluation of moderately complex to complex operational needs and RCT task loading, providing guidance direction to Radiation Control Field Supervisors and RCTs.
- Interface with Rad Ops customers to support mission needs, independently identifying and mitigating any concerns or issues under limited direction; Interact with Environmental Safety & Health (ES&H) Team Tech Supervisor to address NIF, RCT and ES&H needs.
- Identify issues and take action to mitigate risks during radiological or beryllium emergencies or off-normal events.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the TSS.3 Level
- Provide evaluation of complex operational needs and RCT task loading, providing in-depth, analytical direction to Radiation Control Field Supervisors and RCTs.
- Identify and mitigate complex customer concerns and issues via in-depth analysis, employing ingenuity and creativity using significant influence.
- Take a leadership role during radiological or beryllium emergencies or off-normal events.

Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in science, engineering, or a technical field related to health physics or equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience working in the radiological controls and/or engineering and/or physics experimental fields.
- ANSI 3.1 Qualified Senior Radiological Controls Technician.
- Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience with calibration and maintenance of moderately complex to complex of radiological measurement and detection equipment.
- Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience authoring and reviewing documentation to ensure that records are complete, accurate, and meet both NIF and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with the safe handling, shipping and receiving of radiological materials including development of technical radiological procedures and other documents.
- Experience ensuring radiological controls in aan complex engineering/radiological facility.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and ability to solve moderately complex to complex problems independently and under limited direction.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

In Addition, at the TSS.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience analyzing complex operational needs including RCT task loading and providing direction to others.
- Ability to employ ingenuity and creativity to complex problems.
- Prior leadership experience.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience as a Radiological Controls Field Supervisor and/or DOE Rad Con Tech qualified.
- Registered Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT).
- Experience with uncontained tritium and alpha-emitting radioactivity; experience with laser, ventilation and/or vacuum systems.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
