We have an opening for a National Ignition Facility (NIF) Laser Systems programmatic group leader to provide technical and management support to the laser organization within the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF&PS) Directorate. You will lead large teams that are responsible for operating and maintaining the NIF and Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) laser systems including associated laser diagnostics and laser timing. You and your teams will be responsible for the current generation of laser systems and processes as well as the development of the next generation systems. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SEL.3 or SEL.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide overall technical, safety, security and administrative leadership of the NIF Laser Sources and Diagnostics Engineering, Operations and Process organizations within a 24/7 operational facility.
- Manage the following technical teams: support for the NIF Master Oscillator Room (MOR), Injection Laser System (ILS), Laser Diagnostics, Cross-Timing and ARC; development of the processes and procedures for the operations of the NIF laser system and supporting hardware; operation of the NIF front-end systems during NIF and ARC shots and all maintenance for these systems outside of shot operations.
- Supervise, provide technical and administrative direction/guidance, career counseling, mentoring, coaching, and support to 10+ group members; participate in performance reviews, ranking, and salary management processes.
- Establish business plans for program development and execution, costing and managing entire projects to budget.
- Define and propose new requirements to improve productivity and commission new equipment, including identification mitigation of issues as they arise.
- Conduct technical assessment of the design, prototype and testing of new concepts to develop advanced capabilities, monitoring workload to ensure objectives and milestones are being met.
- Monitor the effectiveness of preventive maintenance and repair procedures, track response and downtime associated with special equipment problem logs, and provide quarterly reliability and availability reports to management.
- Partner and collaborate with teams of scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, and coordinators to achieve project goals. - Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the SEL.4 Level
- Assess strategic technical needs for development of supporting research and investments in laser infrastructure; lead technical initiatives in advancing state of the art laser and diagnostic capabilities.
- Serve as subject matter expert on major projects and multi-disciplinary efforts to positively impact the teams long-term goals and objectives.
- Represent the Laboratory to stakeholders and serve on external technical committees and act as primary technical contact and subject matter expert on large programs/projects.

Qualifications
- Masters degree in Engineering disciplines such as laser and electro-optics, electrical, systems engineering or the equivalent combination of education and relevant prior experience.
- Advanced knowledge in complex system design and analysis and significant experience in project planning and complex technical leadership.
- Significant experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of complex problems and leading corrective actions where necessary.
- Significant experience in a 24hr, 7days per week operational facility.
- Significant experience interacting, cooperating, and advising with all levels of technical staff, managers, and vendors.
- Experience leading and managing multi-disciplinary teams.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate and lead teams, presenting and explaining technical information and providing advice to management.
- Experience with workforce and project planning on large-scale laser system operations, maintenance or production support.

In Addition at the SEL.4 Level
- Subject matter expert in one or more of the following areas: short-pulse laser system modeling and design and diagnostics, and CP-OPA laser systems.
- Possess expert level application and development of existing work, internal resources, and partnerships that resulted in successfully developing new project portfolios.
- Ability to lead the application and development of principles, theories, and concepts in an applicable discipline in a creative and innovative fashion.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Engineering.
- Experience in writing technical specifications and statements of work.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
