Nevada Operations Group Leader

We have an opening for a Group Leader for the Nevada Operations Group in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED). This group provides overall engineering support to programmatic projects and experiments including JASPER and projects being commissioned at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). NSED supports multiple activities including x-ray and neutron diagnostics capabilities, monitoring and response activities. The Group Leader supervises personnel supporting programmatic activities and is responsible for managing advanced technical /design related assignments and will work closely with the Program Leaders associated with relevant projects. Interactions are with program engineers and scientists, NNSS M&O Contractor personnel, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) staff, operations personnel, and with all levels of management outside and within the Laboratory. It is expected that, in addition to serving as an Engineering Group Leader, the successful candidate will also hold significant programmatic responsibilities. This position reports administratively to the System Engineering Section Leader in NSED within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Collaborate with NSED Management to define engineering support requirements and manpower plans for programmatic work being deployed at the Nevada Test Site (NTS).
  • Expand and promote the group's technical capabilities in its support of NNSA projects and other internal and external customers by mentoring those in the group, determining training needs, or by arranging for people with needed skills to join the group.
  • Oversee and mentor the group's personnel, foster staff development, and participate in hiring activities.
  • Prepare performance appraisals for group personnel and participate in NSED ranking and salary management processes.
  • Contribute to engineering design reviews, self-assessments and incident investigations by acting as a chairperson, panel member, or reviewer.
  • Work with the Engineering Directorate to support institutional initiatives that promote excellence within the engineering discipline and promote the highest standards in the Laboratory's engineering processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Supervisory experience, including preparing performance appraisals, and participation in ranking processes, and salary management.
  • General knowledge of the nuclear weapons program, diagnostics and non-proliferation activities.
  • Highly advanced knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication processes.
  • Significant experience in interacting with program principals and experimenters and providing leadership and direction to engineers, designers, and technicians.
  • Significant experience in engineering project leadership, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating and tracking, and reporting.
  • Experience in formal design reviews and technical presentations.
  • Ability to work successfully in a highly disciplined, safety critical environment, at a location that requires a degree of somewhat independent operation remote from the main lab.
  • Expert ability to interact within a multi-discipline team and to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner both verbally and in the format of writing for presentations and interactions with other technical staff members and to advise management.
  • Ability to secure and maintain certification in the Human Reliability Program (HRP) which includes: polygraph examination; and physical and psychological assessment; and random drug and alcohol testing.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Masters in Mechanical or related field.
  • Experience with Engineering business practices, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of nuclear weapons design and performance.
  • Knowledge in dimensional metrology, non-destructive and destructive characterization.
  • Knowledge of LLNL and Engineering Directorate ES&H, Business Practices, and technical project Policies and Procedures.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with NNSA's QC-1 requirements.
