The Plasma Physics Division located at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, DC.  The Superintendent oversees the formulation, development, and execution of a large, diversified, and complex R&D program in plasma physics, directed energy, electromagnetic railguns, pulsed power, and related disciplines. The Division performs theoretical and computational modeling coupled with major in-house and external experimental efforts. The Superintendent is responsible for developing new concepts and techniques that will specifically enhance Navy and Marine Corps capabilities through vital investigation of laboratory discharge and space plasmas, EM railguns, directed energy systems, intense electron and ion beams and photon sources, atomic physics, pulsed power sources, laser physics, spectral diagnostics, and nonlinear systems. The Superintendent serves as scientific consultant to the DON, other departments of the government, allied foreign governments, leading universities, and other organizations. The position has significant leverage on innovation and change management in the DON. The scope and extent of the programs influence not only the entire breadth of Naval programs, but also many scientific fields, both nationally and internationally. Due to the professional stature in the scientific community, this position has a greater degree of participation in planning and policy formulation. The Superintendent's technical recommendations are often the most important factor in decisions pertaining to the initiation, coordination, and cessation of important programs, to requirements, and to the development of technically influenced policy. This position is critical to the mission of the organization and requires unique scientific/technical skills, qualifications, and competencies. Applicants should be recognized as national/international authorities and should have planned and executed difficult programs of national significance or specialized programs that show outstanding attainment in their field of research.
