Nanotechnology - Postdoctoral Researcher

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Livermore, CA 94550

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2019 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the areas of nanotechnology. The ideal candidate has strong expertise in CVD synthesis and characterization of carbon nanomaterials (in particular, carbon nanotubes), CVD recipe formulation, and synthesis scale-up in batch and roll-to-roll systems. You should be very familiar with microfabrication processes in a clean room setting, as well as nanostructure characterization by imaging techniques (AFM, TEM, and SEM) and by spectroscopic methods (Raman, etc.). Produced carbon nanomaterials will be incorporated into novel membrane systems and nanofluidic devices. This position is in the Biosciences and Biotechnology division.

Essential Duties

  • Conduct fundamental research in the field of nanoscale materials synthesis, characterization and device fabrication.
  • Independently plan, design, and execute experiments for the growth of vertically aligned CNT arrays with well-defined geometry at small and large scale.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of experiments and statistical analysis to address defined problems.
  • Keep an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook and maintain complete records of experiments.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment andother national laboratories and industry to accomplish research goals.
  • Organize, analyze and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present research results at national and international conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Recent PhD in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or related field with emphasis in Nanotechnology and carbon-based materials
  • Experience with CVD growth of vertically aligned CNTs and characterization with spectroscopy (Raman) and imaging techniques (SEM, TEM, AFM)
  • Experience with thin film deposition, etching, lithography, and other microfabrication techniques
  • Experience in working in a clean room setting
  • Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Ability to understand and analyze experimental results
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
    Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with carbon-nanotube/polymer or ceramic composite fabrication. Experience with I-V device testing, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscope.
  • Experience with Focused Ion Beam nanomachining, E-beam nanolithography, and Atomic Layer Deposition, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, TOF-SIMS, X-ray scattering
  • Experience with experimental equipment design/development, and a wide range of analytical and mechanical testing techniques. Experience with LabView, MatLab, CAD

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: None required.

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
