We have openings for Postdoctoral Researchers to conduct research in the development of new nanomaterials with tailored absorption and electrical properties across the electromagnetic spectrum. You will be part of a team of materials scientists, chemists, and engineers investigating: 1) the incorporation of these materials into a variety of optoelectronic devices, including photodetectors, and devising strategies to improve their performance, and 2) the synthesis of magnetic nanostructures and their composites to improve electromagnetic wave absorption performance. These positions are in in the Functional Materials Synthesis and Integration Group of the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Develop synthesis and surface treatments of nanomaterials and strategies for their solid-state assembly, elucidating the underlying processing-structure-function relationships to guide improvements in materials and device performance.
- Fabricate and characterize performance of optoelectronic devices incorporating LLNLs custom nanostructured materials.
- Design, implement, analyze and resolve synthetic problems and establish solutions leading to materials which meet desired scientific specifications. This includes X-ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM / TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), or other related spectroscopy.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Maintain and establish laboratory protocols.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in materials science, applied physics, electrical engineering, chemical engineering or related field.
- Broad-based knowledge in colloidal/inorganic nanomaterial synthesis and surface chemistry.
- Experience in optoelectronic device fabrication and characterization, and testing.
- Experience in nanofabrication, SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, or other related skills.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques and execution.
- Ability to develop independent research projects and publish in peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effectivepresentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in surface chemistry and high temperature synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials and their characterization.
- Understanding of the concepts of device physics, charge transport in granular nanomaterials.
- Experience with modelling electromagnetic properties of materials (e.g., Lumerical, Comsol, or similar).

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires either no security clearance, or a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level or Q-level clearance depending on theparticular assignment.

If you are selected and a security clearance is required, wewillinitiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. L and Q-level clearances require U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

If no security clearance is required, but your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check. (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
